What was that student nighttime patrol thing NCSU used to have? I think they ditched it a while ago, but I recall them allowing students to walk around at night, with batons and pepperspray, to report any suspicious activity...

Yep. This really dorky kid from my high school did it his freshman year. He was the kind of kid that cried after getting hit with a kickball so I never put much stock in the patrol.

Correct. It was all students who did it and more often than not they were closer to George Zimmerman than a real police officer.

Weren't they called Escorts?

The "service" (more of a club, I guess) was called Student Patrol. I'm sure some people carried pepper spray, but I don't think they were typically armed with batons and shit.

AxlBonBach was a member of the Student Patrol. He was my suitemate in Bragaw back in 2003-2004. Most of the time when he was on duty he would just be hanging out in his room playing video games or something with the walky talky on and a request would come in. Usually he only calls he got was to go over to east campus and escort some students back to their dorms late at night. I think they gave him a van so most of the time he'd just drive them back.As far as I know he didn't have pepper spray or a baton but he was a big so he could look intimidating if you didn't know that he was just a big friendly teddy bear.[Edited on September 12, 2014 at 9:59 AM. Student Patrol used to roam campus in pairs. There were probably 10 to 20 pairs on a given night. I rarely made the trip from the Library to the Dorm after midnight without seeing at least one group. I felt campus was a safer place knowing that there were more eyes out and about making sure things were safe. I imagine it's a liability nightmare from the University's point of view, but I think they should bring Student Patrol back.

I didn't realize they had gotten rid of this. I usually called them when I would come back late in the evening and had to get from S lot to Wood Hall so I wouldn't get harassed by panhandlers on my way back. They always came to pick me up in a van.

They were called escorts, you could call them from those posts with the blue lights on the top which were every 20 feet on main campusI'm Krallum and I approved this message.

http://campuspolice.ehps.ncsu.edu/services/safety-escort-services/In conjunction with University Housing, the University Police Department provides a safety escort service to protect students, faculty and staff on campus between the hours of 10 pm and 4 am, as long as weather is safe for operation. In the hours prior to 10 pm, the police department encourages anyone travelling on campus to walk in well lighted areas with groups of people or to use the Wolfline Bus Service.Contracted security guards will provide a safety escort anywhere on campus to include outer areas such as, but not limited to; the Vet School, the Avent Ferry Complex and Centennial Campus during the 10 pm to 4 am time period. Once a request for an escort has been made, the response time is dependent on the number of requests already received. Requests received from locations without Wolfline bus service will be given priority over locations accessible by bus. Due to vehicle capacity restrictions, safety escorts are limited to groups of no more than 3 people at a time.

Escorts still exist. Student Patrol does not.
