I'm considering a new set of wheels for the car. This would be set #2 for the car.I currently run 20x9 et30 and 255/35/20 tires. I was thinking more performance oriented, and not losing traction. Potential autoX type setup.Looking at 19x9.5" et40. That is 9mm less than stock on the inside, and just under flush with the fender. Tires would be 275/35/19.Another option could be 20" and 275/30. Wheel size minimum is 19" to fit over the brakes. I'm fairly confident that it will fit with no problems. The only rub might be at full lock. I am lowered in Eibachs currently, but may switch to coils next year. I know I'm adding a lot of tire weight. Am I better suited staying narrower with the wheel and tire package to save some weight?Thoughts and opinions?

Minimum 19” to fit over what brakes, space shuttle? 20” wheels with gigantic brakes will cost you quite a bit in performance. You’d have to be looking at a 3500+lbs car with over 500hp before that much mass/size would be necessary in the brake department.

The brakes are 14" all the way around. Same as what come on the G37S or 370Z sport package. 2 piece front rotors, 4 piston calipers.3609 lbs of car. What I'm trying to figure out is if the extra weight is worth the increased traction going that wide. Yeah I'm of the mind that you're crazy. All the unsprung weight you've already added (plus whatever you might add) does nothing good for the handling performance of your car. And unless you take your car to an HPDE you will never come anywhere close to needing all that braking power**unless the Maxima's brake area airflow is just as shitty as a 370Z's.

The factory fronts are 12.7".Going to 14" two piece only adds about 2 lbs.The brakes on the maxima are about gone. All 4 are warped, and I"m at <3mm on the pads.To upgrade all the way around is$800-$1k over just keeping the factory stuff, for a significant improvement.The wheels are the same weight as factory and the tires are a couple lbs more. I know that rotational mass will hurt it some, but big wheels are going to happen.My debate is sticking with 255 on a 8.5" or going to 275 on a 9.5"After the first maxima, the work done to the VW, buying a Juke........ we all know I'm crazy[Edited on July 25, 2014 at 9:33 AM. I break traction regularly, which is why i'm looking at wider tires. This is on acceleration and cornering.With the 255s and current brakes, the car will lock up the tires and activate ABS if I really stomp on the brakes. From the reading I have done, there is significant improvement in pedal feel, and less brake fade. I'm hoping it will get rid of the warping problem that seems to be present on these cars/factory brakes. The brake upgrade is a want, not a need. I could theoretically stick with factory size cryo treated rotors, more aggressive pads, and do a 18x9.5 and a 275/40 for width.Funny enough, I ran 255/4/17 on the first maxima, 10 years ago. why not....its selling point is that it is always in its power band. And I can see if I can get it to overheat and go into limp I'm a spirited driver, pushing on/off ramps, etc. I want to pretend this car is 1klbs lighter and has a couple extra (hundred) HP.

Screw it, I'll explain why not....Even if you put 315s on your car, even the factory brakes should still be able to lock them. Increasing tire SIZE doesn't magically increase grip. Increasing rotating/unsprung mass is bad. You would not overheat your brakes in an auto-x (or on the street) even if the car weighed 4500lbs. For giant brakes to get up to a decent operating temperature, you'd also need power, a lot of it. As for the the brakes that need a 19 inch rim only adding 2lbs per corner, is that after the calipers, caliper brackets AND the rotors. Also, since you bring up how it made sense from a cost perspective, are replacement rotors as cheap as stock? Pads? If you want a performance car, or to auto-x something, a CVT maxima with 20" rims, giant tires and brakes doesn't seem like a good fit.

Can you not sell it and buy a more entertaining and sporting sedan?If I were you I would focus on improving the handling of your car through reducing unsprung, and especially rotational, mass. A brake upgrade is totally pointless unless you're doing it just for looks. Waste of money. Given your car's weight and power output the tire footprint is already fine.

I'm slightly upside down on the loan value, because of the miles I put on the car. I could add the cash and be out of it, but it isn't worth it. I really like the car, just want to make it better.I've already upgraded the rear sway bar, which made a huge improvement. Lowering the car helped a lot, but it still is a small boat.The stock wheels are 22lbs each. I'm looking at 20-23lbs for the replacements, even at 19x9.5. The narrower or smaller wheels are lighter.

I’m not sure what “a hater” is, but I’m trying to help. In fact, I consider my input to be very valuable. This isn’t just my opinion, I’ve been paid good money for car set up/advice and direction. In fact, it could save him thousands of dollars and I hope it does.Here’s something I learned early on; If you can get a platform that closely matches the intended use, it makes a lot of financial sense to start with that platform. The fact that in the case of a car, used (and heavily depreciated) examples being common place is a huge advantage.

^actually it is quite easy to break traction on maximas. engine is torqey and FWD setup just makes it easier with all the torque steer. ...as others have said, put it back to stock, sell it and buy a fun, RWD sedan. pre '04 maximas were actually fun and somewhat good looking cars. it all went downhill with elimination of manual tranny, lack of HLSD and god ugly hugeness of this car.
