never really though nirvana was all that great myself.

would rather listen to so many early 90's grunge/alternative/whatever artists before them.

i'm not saying they sucked, or weren't important, but they very much get treated like the doors, and get more praise than they probably should.

"grunge" is about as worthless a descriptor as "indie." too many bands with different influences and sounds that weren't similar. it had more to do with physical appearance than anything else.

that being said, i occasionally get down on in utero, superunknown and vitalogy

Why not?

Nevermind, it was a stupid point to begin with, but not quite as stupid as your comparison of grunge to indie.

^^ how is it a stupid comparison? they're both terms for genres that don't really identify a specific sound. no grunge bands sounded similar. here's what both grunge and indie bands were/are influenced by:

grunge - classic/hard rock, psychedelic, punk, metal, hardcore, pop

indie - classic/hard rock, psychedelic, punk, metal, hardcore, pop

probably leaving some things out, and indie bands probably draw on a couple more stylistic influences, but you get the point. it's not a stupid comparison. saying "i listen to grunge" or "i listen to indie rock" is just saying you listen to a broad range of styles and doesn't really mean a whole lot.

Nah, I think "grunge" definitely is more confined to a distinct type of music moreso than "indie", although I don't feel like trying to decide and describe what it is. But yeah, appearance was a part of it.

Glad somebody finally made a damn thread for the 90s, etc.

I've been really working to develop a respectable vinyl collection of my favorites. I actually have that Mad Season album on vinyl, so you can be jealous. I also have mother love bone, multiple pearl jam (they're my favorite), soundgarden, alice in chains, nirvana (don't care much for them, though), mudhoney, rem, the replacements, brad, green river, melvins, u-men, etc. I should have a party sometime and just play old-school stuff on my record player.

Yup.

Also indie mostly describes how music is produced, not what kind of music it is.

not really

the kind of people who throw around that term usually tend to be the ones who aren't familiar with what band is on what label

here's a decent read (sort of) on the subject:

http://grantland.com/features/haim-days-gone-indie-rock-death-rattle/

and this:

I've always considered "indie" to be a qualifier for a genre and not a genre itself.

I never said they weren't talented. I said the band sucks.

Densmore and Krieger were competent, and Manzarek did great work later in life. But fuck the Doors.

Let's take a pretty broad definition of "grunge" and extend it to alt-rock of the early-mid 90s:

Alice in Chains is probably my favorite of the Seattle bands (although I like all of them)

(I almost bought one of Audley Freed's old amplifiers back in college, but it had been gigged hard and caught on fire, and I was a little scared to put the cash down on it. After Cry of Love, I think he went on to join the Black Crowes for a few years if I remember correctly.)
