Best idea ever!!!Unless you are in the Soda (fat juice) industry I don't see why one would be against this, even the most die-hard heart bleeding liberal.http://money.cnn.com/2014/06/05/news/economy/food-stamps-soda/index.html?iid=HP_LN

no see it's only wrong to buy soda if you're a filthy fucking useless eater who leeches off the taxpayerwhen you take government handouts the price is your freedom amirite
6/5/2014 9:11:51 AM
yes and this goes with the same justification that those on welfare should take drug tests.I have no problem with people smoking pot. Though if you are on welfare you should not be buying pot with your money.
6/5/2014 9:34:13 AM
But soda is one of the cheapest foods you can buy per calorie. We should ban people from foodstamps if they don't buy soda, because clearly they are not being thrifty. Why should the taxpayers be buying these people premium foods?
6/5/2014 9:42:42 AM
but not long ago Fox News et al were attacking food stamp recipients who bought fish and other seafood. Those foods are very healthy, if food stamp recipients are only allowed to be healthy food then why were they being criticized for buying seafood? we have an economic impact and healthcare costs due to sugary drinks not just from food stamp recipients, really we should tax them for everyone or ban them from everyone instead of sticking it to the poors
6/5/2014 9:46:25 AM
6/5/2014 9:51:21 AM
What about diet soda? It's zero calories. And if you're going to ban sugary soda, why stop there? OJ and most other juices you get at the grocery store are sugar laden. Poor people shouldn't even be able to buy bottled water since they can drink from the tap and plastic bottles are bad for the environment. I say they shouldn't be able to buy anything to drink period.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 10:50 AM. Reason : .]

better solution: end corn subsidies
6/5/2014 10:55:26 AM
This is retarded. I do not support the government regulating any kind of food for anybody to buy.^^Diet soda causes cancer.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 11:13 AM. Reason : asdfa]

the problem with saying "you shouldn't buy/do x if you're on welfare" is that it stems from the belief that people are only on welfare because they're lazywhich is really dumb[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 11:50 AM. Reason : .]
6/5/2014 11:49:52 AM
The purpose of food stamps is to give folks in need money for subsistence. Soda is not subsistence. I'd argue Diet Sodas should be included too. Soda is a luxury not a staple. If you require food stamps to feed your family than you should be thrifty enough to drink water.
6/5/2014 11:59:41 AM
you're going to have to include cookies, chips, snacks, frozen foods high in fat calories, etc. Really, what you want is just veggies since they have no fat and minimal calories, although corn and potatoes aren't good for you, so nix those as well. The point here should be to remind people how poor they are and that they shouldn't be allowed 'luxury' items like soda, snacks, meat (it's expensive!), etc. These people are getting handouts from Uncle Sam, so they shouldn't get anything extra. It'll just spoil them and make them even lazier.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 12:13 PM. Reason : .]
6/5/2014 12:12:25 PM
What does "its a luxury" even mean? It's not up to you to decide what is and isn't a luxury. We give poor people money for sustenance. That includes vices such as soda and beer.
6/5/2014 12:12:33 PM
really, food stamps should be vouchers for gruel. The entitlement needs to stop and nothing more than basic sustenance should be provided for these lazy leeches. I'd say just bread and water, but bread is nothing but carbs and obesity/diabetes are at an all time high.

HUR's welfare plan:Pick 1 per month:Bag of riceBag of beansBag of corn
6/5/2014 12:18:09 PM
actually, we should hand out packs of cigarettes with the gruel vouchers while we are at it. poor people don't work and just sit around all day, so they need something to keep them busy. it would also kill about a 1/3 of them off. sure it'll take decades, but poor people tend to just stay poor anyway.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 12:23 PM. he sure is clever for his use of the term "fat juice"why do you feel that you should have any say whatsoever on what people can and can't buy while on food stamps?
6/5/2014 12:36:13 PM
he's a taxpaying engineer, not some poor, lazy shlub on the dole.
6/5/2014 12:39:01 PM
Soylent?
6/5/2014 12:45:50 PM
he's one of about 135,000,000+ taxpayers. do they all get to drop a suggestion in the suggestion box too?
6/5/2014 12:47:02 PM
Sure they do. Why wouldn't they?
6/5/2014 12:50:29 PM
my point is, with that many people, you're bound to get complaints about nearly every food/drink/need possible, so it's pointless to think that your opinion about what can and can't be bought is pointless
6/5/2014 12:53:37 PM
same could be said for literally any topic, no?
6/5/2014 1:03:49 PM
sarcasm aside, it's pretty clear how little empathy HUR has for poor people. It's sad actually, since lots of people feel exactly the same way.
6/5/2014 1:05:41 PM
sure, but this is specific to what you think another human should or shouldn't be able to eatyou should have zero say in it
6/5/2014 1:06:16 PM
toilet paper is a luxuryuse a towel or use your hand
6/5/2014 1:08:00 PM
welp, I guess the solution is to end food stamps.
6/5/2014 1:08:07 PM
6/5/2014 1:09:43 PM
This may be a dumb question, because I don't keep up with such programs.... but don't "food stamps" already have stipulations - on what can be purchased and where it can be purchased?
6/5/2014 1:12:21 PM
6/5/2014 1:13:55 PM
as long as they die happy-
6/5/2014 1:14:43 PM
i think it's funny how people complain all the time about a nanny state, but then turn around and think it's OK to try to control and punish poor people. again, this sub-humanization of poor people is really sickening.I wonder if HUR has ever stopped to think about how humiliating it must be to actually use food stamps. There are labels all over the grocery store in CA saying what qualifies as WIC. It's usually the cheap shit like a block of generic colby jack cheese, not expensive aged parmesan that people end up getting. If you've ever stood behind one of these people in line, you can see the shame in their eyes about having to use their card. And normally what's in the shopping cart is bare bones basics. ^^haha I hadn't even read that list before, but I was right on the money.^ maybe the person in front of you wasn't ashamed because she's been poor so long or for her entire life. doesn't that make you sad that she's so used to it? [Edited on June 5, 2014 at 1:32 PM. Reason : .]

6/5/2014 1:36:45 PM
because poor people are notoriously bad with money?
6/5/2014 1:37:22 PM
Maybe they fudged their WIC application.^^That is my point, but I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not. People that can afford things don't always do it because it might not be the best thing to do. I just don't like subsidizing poor money mgt skills.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 1:39 PM. Reason : asdfa]

here's a wild idea: how about instead of trying to pass legislation to make sure poor people don't have access to soda, why aren't we doing more to educate them and empower them with nutritional and financial wisdom? isn't it more rewarding and satisfying to teach people how to help themselves, as opposed to punishing them? WWJD or something? LOLOLOL JK! Fuck those stupid and lazy poor people![Edited on June 5, 2014 at 1:45 PM. Reason : .]

the price of luxuries and electronics are falling while the price of essentials (food, housing, etc...) are radically rising. There was a good article not long ago titled "why poor people can afford things but not important things" or something like that but I can't find it. its really not that hard to afford a smart phone, you can do that with a minimum wage job, but you still can't come close to affording everything else. the cost of that smartphone isn't enough to make a difference in relation to the cost of everything else.this is obvious if you think about it
6/5/2014 1:43:30 PM
^^ and ensire minimum wages that keep pace with inflation so that each new generation isn't poorer than the last. And ensure kids have access to training. And factor in financial assistance for job losses from mechanization.[Edited on June 5, 2014 at 1:45 PM. Reason : ]

Not only was she on her iPhone, she was hella LOUD and RUDE! It's almost as if she had no education, whatsoever!

the loud lady in line with an iPhone and a car parked outside with rims is a pretty common conservative trope
