Do you or do you know someone that would DJ a charity event? My team for the Avon Walk for Breast cancer will be throwing an event this summer on a Sunday (July - August; still working on the exact date) at The North Hills Club to help us reach our goal. It will be an afternoon event featuring drinks, food and a raffle of items. As we are a small team, not sponsored, etc, we are hoping that you or this DJ would donate your time and services in exchange for us feeding you, drinks, and tickets for guests/friends of yours that might want to attend. Just general good tunes and background music.

Yes I suppose we could use an iPod and our own stereo system, but we're hoping that would be a last resort.

We've got a 501(c)(3) tax ID. We would promote you on our social media sites for your charity and general awesomeness as well. Feel free to PM me. Thanks in advance.

He was a man of many talents. I never fully understood what happened with his event for Katrina, but I remember it was upsetting to a lot of people. But if you are implying that we are doing something like him I can guarantee you that is not the case.

close friend of mine is a DJ in raleigh and he is inundated with 'please do it for free - think of all the free promotion you'll get' ranging from charity events to stores like macy's - unless there is money involved you'll have a hard time getting anyone that isn't just starting out or a friend

Understood. No harm in asking though. I don't mind people saying no. I've been asking businesses for donations for our raffle for a few weeks now. Not going to let that discourage me from trying.

My wife knows a DJ that is really affordable and has all of his own equipment. (think a couple hundred bucks) She has used him quite a bit for events with her company that have a budget to stay under.

I think you will have a hard time finding someone to do this for free who has invested in equipment and does it for money, unless they have some tie to breast cancer and want to do it to because of that. I can recommend someone really affordable though who might cut you a deal.

If you really want to keep costs down you can rent the DJ setup from somewhere and just hook one of your team members ipod to it.

I believe they can donate their services and get a tax write-off for it?
I mean, it's not the same as getting paid, but you can remind them of that.

A private event, even if it's low-key and the client is wonderful, is a stressful situation for a DJ. The only measure against this stress is that the gigs usually pay well. Professional wedding DJs deal with the soul-crushing nature of their jobs by making hundreds of dollars an hour.

Without a consultation or two (another thing that involves a cost), it's hard to walk in to an event like this and get it right, especially from the beginning. If the event is going to be pretty small and you know what atmosphere you want, I think you're better off going the playlist route.

I appreciate all the advice and certainly won't hold these reasons against someone that says no. I would like an actual name of someone to call and ask at this point, please.

Won't hurt to ask.
