I'm staying in Harare right now for a couple of weeks for business.I've been damn spoiled by the sheer variety of beers in the Triangle...there's something for every taste. I love doppelbocks, Belgian ales, and other such malty, high-gravity beers.Zim has no such beasts. Almost every damn beer you get here is a lager. Think Heineken or Amstel, or a host of Canadian shit, but of local origin. It's almost as brutal as having to tolerate no beer at all.

The only African countries with decent beer are the ones that used to be German colonies. Togo does, anyway. I hear Tanzania too, maybe.

Beer snobs are the worst

If all goes well, I'll be back some time between Sunday and Monday of next week. At which time I shall travel to Paddy O'Beers and enjoy fine malt beverage. After snuggling with the woman, of course.

This thread is really kind of shitty, you know? You're in the third fucking world. What the fuck did you expect you ass hat? Instead of making a thread about all the poverty around you, you made a thread about not being able to drink a craft beer? Really? As if the world needed another reason to hate us you gotta go and do some shit like this.

Looky here, assfuck. The poverty here really is fucking horrible. The country's economy is in the shitter. There's pollution galore and trash everywhere and the streets are full of unemployed people. According to my driver, the unemployment rate is stupidly high, and he feels fortunate to have a job. HIV/AIDS infection rates are almost 15%. But there are lots of beautiful parts to Zim, and it's obvious from my time working alongside a crew of locals at a tobacco leaf processing company that these folks are proud of their country and their heritage despite all that is shitty with it...which is a lot. Speaking of working alongside these guys, they are long days, and we all leave tired and dirty. I've broken bread with them over the weekend and hung out quite a bit. I like them. I like it here. I want to see this country grow and prosper. But goddamn, I still want something other than a fucking lager. And don't suggest Chibuku.

It's kinda funny to think that Bob Marley supported Robert Mugabe, who seems to have turned into a brutal dictator that destroyed the country (I haven't researched into it too much though)
5/19/2014 11:42:38 AM
I did not know that about Bob Marley. I'm trying to become more educated on all things Zimbabwe, but it's a slow process as far as finance goes...definitely not one of my strengths. I do think that Mugabe has definitely done damage...one of Zim's biggest means of income has traditionally been agriculture, with most commercial farms owned and managed by whites (a continuation of what was strong British colonialism). Mugabe's government basically seized these farms and reallocated them to the state and supporters of Mugabe's regime, where they were neglected and grossly mismanaged. The evicted landowners were either deported or killed. Of course, there are other contributing factors in the fall of Zim's economy, but I'm still trying to learn more.

I'm not sure what Marley actually thought of Mugabe, but I know he performed in Zimbabwe when they claimed their independence and Mugabe was sworn into office in 1980.

Simply put, when in Zim, I keep my dick in my pants. There are some beautiful women here for sure, and from what I've seen, Zim men have a weakness for philandering. They have wives to have children and girlfriends for fun. But not me. I'm monogamous and quite happily taken.

For all of its faults, I've always felt American police generally value honor and justice to a high degree. If 3rd world police forces had the same appreciation for honor, it would reduce corruption, and increase security, which I think is the bedrock that lets a society grow. If a country has an honorable police force, and a good legal system, then i think prosperity grows from there. But when the police aren't honest, and the court system is crooked, it will always be the people with guns and money that run things unopposed in a country like that.

Spot on. You hit the nail on the head.Well, there are other factors. But that's a good one. [Edited on May 19, 2014 at 1:20 PM. Reason : Damn straight]
