This is the "GoT neat facts from books, but no spoilers allowed" thread. This thread is for questions that do not fit in the "HBO's Game of Thrones (Spring 2011)" thread (hereinafter "show thread") or the "Game of Thrones book and show comparisons thread" (hereinafter "comparison thread")For example, when Tyrion goes into battle and comes out with a scar - somebody could say "in the book he loses his nose and is generally more disfigured" to which I'd be like "huh. interesting". Or when Daario first appears they could be like "oh that dude has blue hair and beards and shit in the books".This thread is intended for show watchers who have questions about the book but do not want to know anything about the book. This thread may contain answers from one person that are spoilers for another person. By posting in this thread you forfeit your right to complain about spoilers in either this thread, the show thread, or the comparison thread.

Daenerys and Viserys have purple eyes in the books.[Edited on May 5, 2014 at 11:04 PM. Reason : ]

All the children are waaaaay younger in the book, but I think that's pretty well known.Examples:Daenerys is 13 in the first book, and the actress who plays her is like 25 or 26.Arya is 9 when we first meet her, the actress is 17.[Edited on May 6, 2014 at 6:26 AM. Reason : .]

Well...at least the actress that plays Arya looks a lot closer to 9 than 17.

niceeeI approve of this thread. My friend said Theon was tortured for a longggg time in the books before he had any break from it. How does that compare to what we've seen in the show?

Jon Snow's direwolf (Ghost) was actually a runt albino. He's completely silent in the books (no growling, snarling, etc) and has typical albino red eyes.
5/6/2014 11:49:58 AM
In the last episode I think one of the wildlings made a comment about his red eyes. I've only read the first book, but I remember that. I need to finish the series but when GRRM practically spends a page describing a rug, it gets kind of tedious.
5/6/2014 12:23:25 PM
^^ Definitely don't remember that...except for the red eyes part.I wish I had it in me to re-read the books. I flew through them a few years ago (probably took me two months to get through them all)...but there's other stuff I want to read right now and I'm just busy as fuck.

Not necessarily book-to-show related, but in the opening credits it cuts several times to show Westeros' sun...well in that sun is the story of the war that took place to dethrone the Targaryens depicted through pictures of the major houses involved.Back to book-to-show. The Tyrion statement above is true. In the Blackwater battle he lost most of his nose (Cersei in the show even makes a little joke about it at the beginning of last season), and he winds up wearing a kind of prosthesis to cover it up.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that Ramsay Bolton doesn't actually castrate him in the books either, right? When we pick back up with him in A Dance of Dragons he is missing a few fingers and teeth and his hair has turned white or something due to all the trauma but his other organs are in tact.

I'd like to know how the Oberyn / Mountain fight goes down in the books with no spoilers to the upcoming parts please
6/2/2014 11:14:07 AM
Actually the show's interpretation was almost exactly the same as how it went down in the book. It's been a while since I read that scene but I don't think Oberyn was shouting about Ellia as much in the book and accusing Tywin of giving the order to kill her and stuff. The Mountain did gouge out his eyes but I don't think think he actually crushed his skull in.
6/2/2014 11:17:18 AM
6/2/2014 11:30:49 AM
Yeah...I definitely remembered his skull being crushed in.
6/2/2014 11:32:47 AM
lol GRR Martin would use Tyrion puking to describe food.
6/2/2014 11:39:10 AM

6/3/2014 4:40:16 PM

6/3/2014 4:56:14 PM
6/3/2014 5:03:39 PM
Yeah I thought he did.
6/3/2014 8:26:20 PM
6/3/2014 9:07:45 PM
Sweet I love reek!!!
6/3/2014 11:00:23 PM
and you don't know it's Theon for awhile
6/4/2014 8:55:42 AM
Although I love Arya's character, there is absolutely nothing attractive about her in the shows.Sansa, OTOH...is becoming a stone cold fox.
6/4/2014 9:12:24 AM

ok so I want to know with no spoilers:Is Sam a significant character in the book, or is it mainly for the show? Now that Ygritte is dead, what's her role in the book compared to the show?
6/8/2014 10:07:34 PM
Yes Sam is a major character in the books, he gets his own point of view chapters Ygrittes role in the books is just about exactly what you get on the show[Edited on June 8, 2014 at 10:13 PM. Reason : dfh]

So fun fact that seems to be overlooked in the finale -- when Jaime releases Tyrion, he tells him that Tyrion's wife (Tysha) actually wasn't a whore and that she actually did love Tyrion. Prior to that, Tyrion was just content with escaping Kings Landing and leaving it all behind. After finding out that what Tywin did to Tysha, Tyrion was driven to kill him.
6/18/2014 9:20:57 AM
I wouldn't describe that as a fun fact. I would describe that as "super important conversation that happens in the books". Though in the show Tysha is only mentioned once, so it isn't as important.
