Do you mean rotten or just past a printed expiration date?

If the 2nd, me. Expiration dates are just guidelines for most things.

nah, not rotten. i'm not homeless, just lazy.

dates. i always get stuff when i shop and then forget that i only have a few days to cook it, and then it ends up expired before I eat it. only the pork ever really makes me consider what i am doing

I was gonna post earlier that I'd at least open an old bag of chips or something, but wouldn't eat old meat, fruit or vegetables

Then I was hungry just now and didn't have anything at the crib, but I had some pepperidge farm box I had gotten for Christmas sometimes loooong ago...the meat was vacuum sealed but i didnt touch it, but i did open the crackers, which were still sealed in the bag...ate a few...they still had a fresh type of crunchiness but they smelled like chemicals so i didn't eat more than like 6 or 8...i'll post ITT tomorrow if I yack tonight

Back in 2009 I spent ~$50 one evening on canned food. Harris Teeter had a pallet of brand new canned food right at the entrance when I walked in. $0.33/can for veggies, $0.50/can for fruit.

I still have a pantry full of them. Some with "best by" dates of 2011 and 2012...they all still taste great. As long as they are canned properly they'll last practically forever.

I also frequently eat meat that has been in our freezer for years. No issue as long as it has been frozen the entire time (vacuum-sealing really helps).

I ignore expiration dates. I hold my nose and eat brown/slimy vegetables--just scarf em down really quick. Moldy, soft cheese gets trashed, but for hard cheese, I just scrape the mold off. And I don't eat meat that smells funny.

I've got two friends who's primary source of food is grocery store dumpsters. I've eaten at their house prolly 50 times and never got sick.

Yeah. Meat and bread is wrapped. The veggies are usually just in a big box. They just wash the veggies just like you would with store bought.

Sadly, dumpster season has come to an end thanks to the warmer weather. At least for perishables. And dumpsters stink so bad in the summer you'd have to be a hardcore MF to go after the non perishables.

Trolls are the ones throwing out perfectly good food when 20,000,000 US children come from homes with food security issues. And I don't know how many tens of millions of adults, and how many hundreds of millions of people outside the US. They are trolling the world. And I haven't even mentioned the waste of the energy and raw materials that went into the food, which is not recoverable.

Dumpster divers at least save the energy and the product from going to waste.

As for "eating food out of the garbage", well that's just a play on words. It is not waste, refuse, leftover restaurant food, spoiled food, etc. If I throw a perfectly good thing into the garbage, that doesn't make it garbage. Are you too good to pick out a gold coin or a bundle of $100 bills from the garbage if you see it?

I don't do dumpster diving, but I am not going to knock people who pick out packaged non-spoiled food to feed their families. Food is money.

milk still gets the sniff test, along with other foods...(ive defiantly spit milk in the sink, just b/c it passed the sniff test doesnt always mean it passes the taste test)

the only thing that doesnt is meat...meat doesnt get any kind of test

My wife gets grossed out when I eat stuff thats been in the fridge for a couple days but smells and looks fine. I've also had milk that was a couple days past expiration...it didn't smell/taste sour.

The date on milk is usually a sell by date not expiration date.

But I won't consume any dairy product past the sell by date or expiration date. Meat either. Other stuff it just depends on what it is and how hungry/lazy I am.

Yogurt and other fermented dairy products are still good far past the expiration date. I regularly eat yogurt that is a week or 2 out, and it is fine. Max I have gone is 4 weeks and it was still good.
