I lost a ton of weight and was almost 30 before I was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. That being said, mid-20s is a pretty common time to get diagnosed because that's usually when shit starts going down. And since thyroid problems occur more in women than men, that explains why you see females having issues more.

too much coffee. caffeine is also lipophylic meaning it loves to attach to fat cells. consider this when you drink 8 cups of coffee a day to starve yourself to stay thin or lose weight.
5/2/2014 6:33:19 PM
^That's right.+1 meth
5/2/2014 7:09:03 PM
^^ is that just coffee or caffein in general?

My girlfriend has had a diagnosed thyroid problem her whole life. Luck for me, the problem works in reverse and keeps her thin. Chick can eat horribly and still have abs

OP's logic also explains why so many parents think vaccines cause autism (Jenny McCarthy notwithstanding): The time babies get most of their shots is also the time the symptoms of autism start appearing.

I think doctors are just saying fuck it and diagnosing people with thyroid problems just cause.I didn't conclusively test for it, and I'd lost weight instead of gaining it, but my doc said I still had symptoms and gave me pills. I love them. Actually waking up when my alarm goes off is pretty sweet. It makes me feel like an adult and stuff.
5/4/2014 1:41:54 PM
I think I need some of those pills. If not waking up when your alarm goes off is a thyroid problem then I definitely have one.
5/4/2014 1:54:43 PM
doctors are afraid to talk about weight and nutrition in an honest way
5/4/2014 2:01:19 PM
I'm not overweight. I like my doc though. He doesn't want to be my primary care physician, but I don't go to anyone else so he's kinda stuck with me. I can show up in any condition, and he doesn't patronize me with lectures.
5/4/2014 2:31:23 PM
i don't get how people sleep through alarms, they're the most annoying goddamned thing on earth.
5/4/2014 4:00:54 PM
1: dreams are a crazy thing. Alarm becomes something else entirely.2: snooze button should have never been invented. Snooze rewards NOT getting up.3: that fucking feeling when you are so tired and that shit goes off, but give in to more sleep : priceless

I'm sorry that happened to you. I've just heard several comments from doctors that are like, "So I guess they've got everybody on that now." Also, my initial tests came back normal, but instead of bothering with a full panel, my guy just gave me the meds cause my symptoms were so pronounced. I also had no idea there was something off, and I didn't mention the possible diagnosis to him. He observed it on his own in like less than five minutes.Me: I think I got ass cancer, doc. I don't go to the bathroom at all, and my back hurts.Doc: At all?Me: Once a week, with stimulants. For months now.Doc: Hmmm... You know you got a lot of wax in your ears.Me: So that's why I can barely hear! LOLDoc: How's your hair?Me: It's been falling out, but you can't tell. My skin peeled off, too. I basically molted during a pedicure! It was embarrassing, but I kinda like my new skin. Look at my tan! Doc: ...Me: But, sometimes, my hands shrivel up. It's like I age 20 years right in front of my eyes.Doc: I can see that.Me (holding my hands out): Yeah, isn't that so strange? I got grandma hands!Doc: How's your energy?Me: I'm good in the morning! But, after work, I'm almost too tired to stand up in the shower. I'm getting so old! LOLDoc: Besides your back, do you have any other pain?Me: Nope...but my legs go completely numb in the evening. It's really weird.Doc: Are you...are you retarded? That's when it first occurred to me that I did not have ass cancer.

^^this. Not to mention the ridiculously long list of symptoms associated with thyroid issues that go far beyond weight gain.^full panel is best for optimal dosage. Should try that now that you are diagnosed.[Edited on May 5, 2014 at 1:36 PM. Reason : ]

I'm a little weird...I definitely caused my own problem, and I suspect I could fix it. I'm pretty sure there are better meds for me, but it's not something I wanna get into. I like the ones (and the dose) I have enough, and I'm not interested in devoting more time or thought to it. I just live.[Edited on May 5, 2014 at 1:58 PM. Reason : ]

That's cool. I was the same way for many years, but I'm glad I researched more and had my dr switch my meds. I've only been on this new drug for five months, but after some initial tweaking I feel much better. Some days I don't even need to drink coffee or more than 1 cup of it. It's awesome.
5/5/2014 2:03:18 PM
You shouldn't have mentioned the coffee thing! LOL I drink so much. I might deal with it when I have more time, and I'm being more healthy in general. I exercise, but I don't eat regularly and whatnot so I can't really complain at the moment.
5/5/2014 2:28:41 PM
I believe it's caffeine as the molecule alone. Coffee would be even worse because of all the stuff people put in them I'd imagine.
5/5/2014 6:34:50 PM
Everything I've read about caffeine and hypothyroidism says to wait and drink it until after that initial cortisol spike in the morning. Sometime around 9 if you wake up at 6. Shouldn't eat or drink anything for an hour after you take your meds anyway.
