Want to have it around to haul crap when necessary, and to take my son camping on to the beach. Its got 196k miles on it. Anybody have any advice? Any common issues I should be looking for? They seem to get great reviews from their owners online...

half ton, 3/4 or 1 ton?- dash- trac bar, steering box, joints, etc....just drive it and you can tell- automatic transmission (if its been abused, it will need a rebuild)- if it's a diesel, make sure the electric 'lift' fuel pump has either been replaced or performance has been verified. fuel starvation to the VP44 injection pump of the 99-02 dodges equates to spending $$$ on replacement

Dash is definitely cracked, but I found a relatively cheap cover for it. Made by a company called Coverlay. What is the difference that makes a Ram a Laramie?

Laramie package has the infinity sound system/power everything/etc.diesel or gas?

Get your new dash from LMC Truck, they sell two types, a completely new replacement dash pad, and a molded plastic cover that fits perfectly on top of the existing dashboard so you don't have to take all that shit apart. I mean perfectly too, I put one on mine, it was like getting a whole new truck.

The one I found was from coverlay. Still no answer as to whether its diesel or gas. Engine and trans have never been rebuilt, but

I'm a little miffed that we don't know what engine or series dodge it is.I also forgot, those things have what is called a CAD for the 4wd engagement, located on the front axle. it's essentially a vacuum actuated sleeve that locks the long-side front axle shafts together to engage 4wd. often the flexible vacuum lines routing to/from the unit break, leaving you 4wd-less. (no locking hubs or anything like that)
