Man, we've gone back and forth on eggs like a dozen times over the past thirty years.

What's the current consensus? Is they bad or not?

What's the harm in eating them raw?

They have a shelf life of several weeks uncooked and unrefrigerated , so I'd imagine an egg 2 days from the market broken and eaten immediately shouldn't pose any risk.

i guess salmonella?

i haveread everywhere that if you want to eat eggs raw, get them from a farmer who does not keep them in cages and lets them eat off the land and does not give them any drugs. i.e., organic and free-range.

Sorry to disappoint. I'll try again.

Eat eggs. White + yolk. They're a relatively inexpensive complete protein that can be prepared a variety of ways. Cook them if you're worried about salmonella. Exercise if you're worried about cholesterol.

[rant]

This. I switched to eating a bunch of eggs, chicken, leaner meats, healthy oils (coconut, olive, etc) things with lots of saturated fats and my cholesterol went down.

Things that make cholesterol go up:

Sugar and processed foods.

Whether you're trolling or not I'll still explain because I like ranting about food.

Quote :
"i've always heard saturated fat caused a rise in cholesterol?"

First link I came across:

http://chriskresser.com/the-diet-heart-myth-cholesterol-and-saturated-fat-are-not-the-enemy

The whole "fat is unhealthy" myth was big in the 80s, 90s, and 00's. Once everything started going "fat-free" guess what happened? America got fatter. It's not the fat that is causing heart disease and obesity in America it's at it's simplest sugar.

Simply put if you eat a bunch of sugar in any form (sugar, processed foods, complex carbs, etc) your body is going to process those first because it's quicker energy. Any fat you eat on top of that won't get burned off and sure the extra calories cause weight gain which in turn causes heart problems.

Take out the sugar and processed foods and your body reverts back to burning what it's good at. Fat. Fat is only bad when you're already on a poor diet. There's nothing wrong with eating healthy whole foods and naturally occurring fats.

There's a bunch of books on it but here's a good one:

http://www.amazon.com/Wheat-Belly-Lose-Weight-Health-ebook/dp/B00571F26Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1399770410&sr=1-1&keywords=wheat+belly

Saturated fat is very healthy in it's natural form. Things like coconut oil, lean animal fats, fish oil, nuts and seeds are all incredibly healthy and your body literally eats them up. Eat whole foods and healthy fats and you'll start feeling better immediately.

You'd be amazed at what blood sugar spikes do to your body. You get head aches, become tired, maybe feel less alert, and just feel shitty overall. Eliminate those spikes and all those go away. I never knew I felt shitty every day after lunch from eating a sandwich until I stopped eating them and I no longer feel that after lunch slump.

Although the best part about eating whole foods is you can eat as much as you want and your body will tell you when you're full.

Awesome then. Yeah the whole fat is bad myth needs to die.

I mean most "fat free" foods are high in sugar. Same thing with the recent gluten free craze. Just because something is gluten free doesn't mean it's not pumped full of sugar.

You didn't explain anything. You didn't answer the man's question. All you did was a Google search, and then you gave your same spiel about processed foods and sugar.

You're obsessed with running your mouth about it, like your the first person on the planet to give up bread. And did you really think this Smath guy needed a lecture on sugar? Do you read posts or just make them?

I saw "wheat belly" in the link and my eyes automatically started to

Long story short: Ancel Keys cherry picked his data about saturated fat and heart disease then lobbied with the right people to fuck up our dietary recommendations. When you get you blood "cholesterol" measured, about 75% of that comes from what your body makes itself and the other 25% is from diet.

Sure I did. I gave him a couple references and gave him my opinion. I explained why naturally occurring saturated fats are healthy and why your body has difficultly processing them when it's ingesting large quantities of sugars.

Quote :

My main emphasis was on processed foods that react with your body and spike your blood sugar. Bread is one of them...among many...there's a plethora of data on why sugar is bad for you... that's all I'm saying.

Quote :

Did you read it? It's one interesting viewpoint with numerous well compiled points but also numerous flaws. Do you just like reading negative views to make a point or did you actually go out there and read the material yourself to acquire your opinion?

I'm obsessed with running my mouth about it because of how much better it made me feel. I'm allowed to give my opinion.

as someone who regularly reads research studies about nutrition, I try to stay away from fear-mongering propaganda and stick to actual scientific literature

Makes sense. I on the other hand love reading scientific literature as well as reading "fear-mongering propaganda" because it gives me various sides of the story and lets me criticize works based upon my own discovery and understanding instead of trusting someone else's critique.

Long story short I heard the author interviewed on NPR and it was a very interesting so I read the book on a plane ride. In my opinion if you try to only read scientific studies and discount anything that's not a peer reviewed massive study then it's a little harder to think about the box. Obviously I'm going to take such opinions with a grain of salt but it just helps me form my overall opinion on such matters.

To each his own but I'd rather ingest as much as I can and form my own opinion. Just like I enjoyed reading Campbell's book on the China Study and evolving my opinion based upon what I learned from it.

There's a decent amount of work surrounding Ancel Keys as well. "The Great Starvation Experiment" was one I have on my reading list. More about his methods and less about the outcome of his discoveries though.

You are the worst poster in the history of the Internet.

I'm a little sleepy so I can't elaborate precisely at the moment.

But you need to know that you suck. You suck extra bad.

You should try posting about other topics, not just how awesome it feels to not stuff your face with ice cream sandwiches. I feel like it's been almost a year of your adjustment; at this point, it's time to move on and stop lecturing people about what they already know. Post some jokes, show some range...

(Legal weed and skiing don't count as range.)

And lay off the cliches. In this one post alone, we've got "long story short," "think about the box," "grain of salt," and "to each his own." It's making me nauseous.

But, more generally, just try not to sound so self-important. You've gotta find a way to disguise that awful quality.

I don't usually rant about diets. I'm mainly nerding out about computers, laptops, phones, android, video games, hiking, climbing, backpacking, mountain biking, restaurants, and traveling. Yes and now skiing because I just moved to Colorado and it's awesome. Those are the topics I usually rant about on TWW. I think I've mentioned weed a couple times in the last year? More because it's funny being here and it being legal (I'm not really a huge smoker).

Quote :
"And lay off the cliches. "

That's what the internet is for...it helps to get posters like you all riled up and makes me sound self important. The more self important I feel the more likely I am to spark a debate which is what makes TWW fun. If I was all nice and complimentary no one would get mad at me.

Quote :

That was a sarcastic response to begonias saying "long story short" in her post prior to mine. Unfortunately I stole that one.

COME ON! Who ever says "think about the box"??!? I thought I was being original there.

Quote :

I like salty foods.

Quote :

This one I like using because it makes the aforementioned user (who gets upset a lot) not feel so bad about themselves.

Take it easy - if you can't come up with something intelligent or witty to say resorting to insults isn't always the best approach to take. I know I'm not very funny. At least I admit it. Although I'm all ears - I don't like to discriminate even for people who can't come up with a decent retort.

Quote :
"Post some jokes, show some range..."

I have quite the range on TWW. I pride myself in all the random shit I like doing. (hint: helping me feel self important here!). Feel free to enlighten me about all the interesting things in your life...if you've got an interesting story about food, traveling or some fun activity let me hear it. I like talking about all the fun stuff I do because it's fun and I'm at the point in my life where I have the means to do pretty much whatever I want.

Including getting in arguments like this on TWW. hehe.

The majority of the food I buy doesn't have ingredient labels and the stuff I do buy that has more than one ingredient I usually check it out. If she making Americans be more aware of what's in their food then more power to her. Back to my original rant that everyone's tired of hearing...if you eat whole foods you've got a lot less to worry about as far as ingredients (obviously still distinctions between GMO, organic, cured meat, etc.)

She's doing nothing to increase the nutritional literacy of this country. Advising people to avoid ingredients they can't pronounce is blatant anti-intellectualism. While there's nothing wrong with trying to avoid processed foods, there is something very wrong with letting ignorance guide your dietary choices.
