My father-in-law just gave me his hold Chevy S10 truck. About a year ago he bought a new fuel pump and tank for the truck from Advanced Auto and had a mechanic put it in. Now it's acting up (I believe fuel is evaporating?) and the service engine light is on. I still have a warranty on the part and can get a replacement, but I need an affordable mechanic to put it in.Any recommendations?

My recommendation is to have somebody pull error codes to maybe get a definite idea as to WHY the thing is acting up. You can throw parts at it all day long, but until you know specifically why the truck is running poorly, it's totally hit-and-miss. With a lot of miss and a lot of wasted time and money. If it's '96 or newer, most auto parts stores will read error codes for free. You lose nothing but five minutes of your time for stopping by. You might gain a lot more insight to why you have a problem. Have any problems starting it in the morning or when it's been sitting for a while?

No not really - takes a second or two to start, but it's done that for years.

and if it's older than '96, then you can read the codes yourself with nothing but a jumper wire

Wish it was - 1996

Like ZX said...Pull the code and troubleshoot from there. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that you should replace the two newest parts on a 18 year old truck.

Sorry - I should of stated we already pulled the code - i don't have it with me right now (father-in-law does)But it suggested that part needs to be replaced
