"Star Trek XIII is the announced sequel to the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness.

Producer Bryan Burk has commented that Paramount wants the third film to take less time to produce than Into Darkness, and that 2016 – the 50th anniversary of Star Trek – would be a logical year to release it. [1] Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have added that Paramount is insisting on a 2016 release date. [2]

Director J. J. Abrams has chosen to direct Star Wars Episode VII, so he will only produce the film. [3] Abrams noted "that having directed pilots and movies and then having seen subsequent directors work on those shows or do their own versions of those films – time and again I have seen it done better." [4]

In September 2013, Abrams acknowledged rumors that Rupert Wyatt could helm the sequel, stating "He's incredibly talented, and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go." [5]

Abrams has stated he would like more female characters in the sequel. [6] He also mentioned the sequel could fallback on abandoned story ideas for the characters. "There was [an idea] implying the sexuality of one of the characters, a back story for another character that was pretty intense, a really funny story we wanted to do with yet another. Hopefully, if there are future films, those other stories will get their moment," he said. [7]

Damon Lindelof said they would bring back the Klingons and that he would like to bring back Khan Noonien Singh, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. [8] However, Lindelof will not be collaborating again with Orci and Kurtzman on the script. [9]

Michael Giacchino is open to scoring the next film. [10] Bruce Greenwood has expressed hope Christopher Pike could return in a flashback scene. [11]

On 2 November 2013, it was reported that Attack the Block director Joe Cornish was Paramount's choice to direct the film, though reports differed as to whether or not he had already begun negotiations to join the project. According to Variety, Cornish was offered the film once before in May 2013 but had turned it down. [12] [13] [14] Abrams voiced his support for Cornish, stating "I don't know if [he] is the guy. My guess is that's up in the air. I adore him and love him and can't wait to see what he does next. Hopefully it will be 'Star Trek'." [15]

As the domestic gross of Into Darkness, which stood at $228.5 million, was less than the first film, Paramount have made the decision to film the sequel outside Los Angeles to save money. "We're making it for what it should have been shot for last time if we had made it outside of L.A., which we would have done except that [J.J. Abrams] didn't want to," a studio source told The Hollywood Reporter. "That was a $20 million issue." [16]

On 6 December 2013, it was announced that up-and-coming screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will be writing the script alongside Bob Orci. It was also announced that Alex Kurtzman would not be involved with the project due to work on the Amazing Spider-Man movies and other projects. [17]"

it will be a remake of Star Trek IV and involve an alien probe coming to earth attempting to communicate with giant squid for no reason. Kirk and the gang team up with non-Asian Khan in order to go back in time to the year 1986 and find a giant squid, where they encounter their prime counterparts hunting for whales. hilarity ensures.

There will be, yet again, a new Enterprise design and then they will blow it up.

My prediction:

Carol Marcus works with (old) Spock to create the Genesis Torpedo and launch it at a lifeless rock creating a new Vulcan planet.

maybe they need someone as smart as khan to help them make the device
and of course he will not have a hidden agenda

or

maybe the Starfleet elite are using khan's blood to make sure the rich live forever and everyone else doesn't

or

the fucking doomsday machine with modern FX, say it busts in right in the middle of a Federation/Klingon all out war, and common enemy makse a truce happen, and Christopher Lloyd makes a cameo lolol

or

maybe a combination of the above, and Kirk and co fucks up royally, but the Guardian lets Kirk get a do-over (maybe even run into old shatner in some anti-flashback shit

^I was just talking about this today at work with a fellow trek-fan. I like the new movies in that the effects are good, but the plot has not been up to trek standards (at least my standards)

I was a Trek fan, but not hard core with the original. I actually appreciate and really enjoy the new movies! I am probably in the minority with this feeling. The characters do a good job of embracing what I remember of the originals.

The Wrath of Khan stuff was way too forced.
There was no point in killing Kirk if they just bring him back to life in the next scene, when Spock died in tWoK it took 3 movies to get him back to his normal self.
A lot of the plot devices were dumb (magic blood, transporters that can span the galaxy, etc)
Weak characters
lot of other things.

It was a decent action film.

I think this time they will do an original story. As long as they didn't do Khan people would be asking "why didn't you do Khan?", so that's out of the way.

I did not want a rehash of the wrath of khan. granted the story was different, but it was obviously set up to mirror TWOK in many ways. I never bought into it in the new movie... the original was good because of the history that went back to the original episode "Space Seed" which set up a reason for Khan to HATE kirk.
