Been a while since I've played in car audio...2007 Chevy colorado ext cab; stock radio + 4 blown speakers. I can't stand listening to these things anymore and with 230k miles, I'm not looking to do much with this thing; however, I do like polishing a turd as much as I can (within a reasonable budget). So with the stock radio (12-15 watts/channel so I'm told) what's my best bet for getting a corn kernal out of this log? I can grab some $15 speakers and throw them in there, but if throwing a little more money at them would yield measurably better results, then I would (say $100 for all?). The stock radios are pretty quite, so I'd prefer something with a high sensitivity, unless there's a reason not to...

I doubt it's worth the effort to replace them with $15 speakers. Just figure out what size you need and find some used ones that would normally run $40-$100 per set. Speakers rarely go for more than half of what they cost new. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find four basic MTX/Kicker/Kenwood/Etc speakers for $100 or less. You'll get your money's worth from the use and it'll make it a much easier sell when you decide to get rid of it.

If you're buying new you might want to just buy from Crutchfield. They always have some competitively priced stuff and the wiring harnesses they include are worth it. Just plug in your vehicle info in the "Find what fits my car" tool and it'll spit out a list of stuff that fits.I bought my receiver that way. Paid right at $100 for one that came with a free dash kit, wiring harness, installation instructions, shipping, etc. It was only about $6 cheaper at Amazon. The dash kit, instructions, and wiring harness more than made up for it.[Edited on February 19, 2014 at 2:38 PM. Reason : s]

yeh, I'm going to look there as well. Always had good experiences with CF.^Oh, I agree. I redid the entire audio system in another colorado from CF. Every piece and instruction I needed was in the box from CF and the install was a breeze. Wasn't that much more than trying to bargin shop it.[Edited on February 19, 2014 at 2:40 PM. Reason : .]

At 230k miles and it being a somewhat temporary vehicle, I'm not worried about great sound, etc. I just need new speakers since the current ones are shot. [Edited on February 19, 2014 at 5:29 PM. went with the sony's in my link above; but got from CF so I'd get the harness & brackets too. about 1 hour to uninstall old and install new and it's a completely different sound system.the speakers are a bit harsh on the highs, so I had to turn the treble down a good bit. but hell, they're $25 6.5" door speakers, no amp, and nothing to push lows, so I won't complain.[Edited on March 4, 2014 at 10:03 AM.
