The sign says "440 West," but our GPS clearly showed we were going directly eastbound.

It's the same going the other direction. Signs say "I-440 East," but they quickly change to "I-40 West," as you drive toward downtown Raleigh. How can you be going east and west at the same time?"

Inner and Outer Beltline was too confusing too.

Why not just put "if you didn't know where you were going before, you're going the wrong way now" on the signs

I never had a problem with inner v. outer, but I always though it'd be easier to think of it as clockwise versus counterclockwise

Inner/outer is 1000000x better than the bullshit they have up now. If you're too goddamn stupid to know if you're on the inside loop versus the outside loop how the fuck are you going to find your way around if the same goddamn road changes direction

If those people trust their GPS so much maybe they should turn it on and have it confirm that they're going the right way.

Maybe they can call it Clockwise 440 and Counter 440.

(Inner and Outer made sense to me).

I think it is a tight enough of a circle that you know which way you are going.

Just color code it. 440 RED (inner, duh ), 440 GREEN (outer). Paint the asphalt to match. Then wait for the article about people who think it's too difficult to navigate. They said to take 440 Red, but the road is clearly more of a burgundy than red. It's very confusing.

its a lot better now that 440 is not a circle anymore at least.

When 440 made a complete loop around raleigh, inner and outer made perfect sense. (i think clockwise and counterclockwise would have made it even easier)

but now that 440 is just a bypass and not a complete loop, east/west makes sense. (the part where 440 and 40 overlapped no longer carries the 440 badge)

but people are fucking morons. the worst are people who think roads should change designation because they curve. (oh, this part should be called 440 East... oh now it should be called 440 East-North-East... oh wait another slight curve... rename it 440 North East...etc)

it was a horrible system for anyone that doesn't live in Raleigh and just passes through. The loop name was deceiving as well, as they don't even loop together - you have to take the cloverleaf exit at US-1 to loop around. Other cities with functional beltways don't require you to take exits to stay on the beltway.

The separated roads with I-40 on the south side and I-440 on the north side is so much simpler. I didn't realize they still had signs downtown referencing I-440 though; that's kind of dumb to have not fixed that yet.

it made much more sense than trying to assign directions to a loop. but I like the scheme they have now better.

I always figured anyone, native or not, with common sense would know to plan to keep Raleigh on their left/right

Up next at six, why do north street and south street in Raleigh go east-west, and west street and east street goes north south.

THE SHIT IS CONFUSING. I CANT HANDLE CARDINAL DIRECTIONS EXCEPT WHEN I WANT TO BITCH ABOUT THEM.

I prefer inner/outer as well. The new naming will still confuse me a bit if I'm taking an exit/onramp I'm not used to.

did you also figure that anyone not from here would know that inner loop and outer loop would refer to lanes on an interstate and not to I440 and I-540?

i work for the dot, and i can confirm that people are idiots when it comes to direction. hell, half the time the raleigh police get it wrong. they get the directions confused, and ive heard them call out "440 northbound' on the radio before as well as still calling the I-40 section I-440. also, the contractors in charge of fortify are clueless as well. when they call to tell us where they will be working that night they get the directions cofused, they get exits confused or tell us they are closing one lane when they are actually closing 3. they also dont work more than they do, this is going to be much longer than the 3 years they say its going to take.

[Edited on February 12, 2014 at 1:15 AM. Reason : fortify.]

This isn't a local or sign issue. It's a stupid people issue. Road directions refer to the long-distance travel direction, not segment directions.

I love how I-40 Eastbound of Raleigh goes almost entirely due south

They should just change all the signs to:

Go Home Rube
and
Go Home Yankee

This sounds like a good suggestion. Then you could use two different colors for 540 loops as well.
