My wife and I bought a new home in Wessex in Cary (just off Harrison & Weston). Since we moved in in May, there have been several break-ins on our street.Back in June, the goons that kidnapped the manager from the Jared's at Southpoint and went on a chase robbed one of my neighbors at gunpoint. Luckily, 3 days later, they robbed the Jared's and were subsequently arrested.Fast forward to Saturday night. My next door neighbor has been doing extensive renovations to his home. He had a side door that was newly added and the contractor did not install the locks on Saturday. At 11:10 PM Saturday night, he called 911 and then me, to tell me that there were 2 intruders in his house. Luckily, when he yelled to leave, they bolted out the side door. They left behind a 12" bayonet on his desk downstairs. By the time I got my gun out of a quick open safe, the bad guys were gone and the cops were here.Apparently, the same thugs that did this Saturday also "broke into" two cars on my street. I say "broke into" because the cars were unlocked (idiot owners), but still, it leaves you a little unnerved. I thought moving into a nice neighborhood would give me a this warm and fuzzy feeling, not the feeling that I am now living in Durham.Luckily, the cops responded Saturday in less than 90 seconds, however, the kids had since taken off in a car (another neighbor saw the car leaving, but did not connect the dots). Now, there are cops camped out front of my house. It makes you feel safe, but sad that they have to be there. End of story.

oddly enough, I lived in east Durham for 20 years and never had a break in on my street. Sorry to hear about all that going on around you tho

Sucks to hear.Replacing welfare and other antipoverty programs with a basic income or expanded EITC would reduce these kinds of incidences in the future. Shame our society doesn't care to target the root of these types of problems.

I was on Centennial Campus for 10 years and never had an issue. Then I moved into a $Texas house and shit got real.

put a CPI sign in your yard

I would get an alarm system and some security camera shells. I love the piece of mind our alarm system gives us, I don't worry about not being woken up by a breakin at night and the house is secured when we are gone so they can't take their sweet time. Also, I couldn't justify security cameras is I just got some shells that were dirt cheap and look like the real thing. If someone sees those they will likely think they are real and probably won't tempt it. Since you can't physically prevent a breakin it helps to make people think yours provides a higher risk of them getting caught.

yeah, you see the same thing in North Raleigh and Brier Creek too

I've got the CPI sign in the front yard and lights that shine on the front of the house. I welcome them to come in the daytime as I would not yell for them to leave. Once they are inside, if I see them, they are dead. Their warning stops at the front door. I will protect my "castle" aka wife and baby boy.

Yep. Ammo is expensive. No more warning shots.

get some wifi surveillance cameras. you probably just need 2 of them.you can get by with mounting them inside, facing out and use a motion option. hopefully you can adjust the motion since some go off with heat/wind/trees and crap.

in Morrisville, there was some profiling going on by the robbers and a flurry of Indian family robberies took place. Not sure if thats still happening, but apparently indians keep lots of jewelry around the house.

I live in Cary and have never had this problem. Half of our street is home during the day since its full of telecommuters, stay at home parents and shift workers. Apparently a few of the neighborhoods around us have had issues, but those are set-up the same and have only seen problems with the houses located closest to the main roads.

Get an alarm and video surveillance.

Douche Bag, shoot those Douche Bags dead if they make the mistake of entering your house.

I've armed my alarm, which I've never done in the past. Again, I'm not out to get anyone, but if you want to break in to my house and bring a knife, I welcome the opportunity. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

What if they bring a gun

I grew up in the neighborhood right beside Wessex. There's been like 3 times in 22 years I've heard of anyone's cars getting broken into in any one of the numerous neighborhoods/apartment complexes around there. Always has been a pretty safe area.

I knew a Cary cop and he was like "you have no idea all the crazy stuff that goes on in Cary", contrary to the image the city council tries to put out I guess.
1/30/2014 10:23:45 PM
hopefully somebody prevails over these scumbags

I live in the ghettos of glascock st and never had issues. I guess poor thugs don't rob other poor thugs...my PS2 apparently doesn't do it for them.

Growing up, we never just left the garage open. We have a key pad, so I can get in anytime, but I always viewed that as an invitation for someone to come shopping for a 5 finger discount. Then again, we lived on a corner and our garage faced the side street.I feel safe, but also know we need to be smart about leaving the house or cars unsecured.

^^ I live in the same area, and there was a rash of break-ins in late 2012, including my house. One of the guys got caught when he was using a laptop stolen from one of the houses and the owner took a picture of him with the built-in webcam via remote desktop. He lived three blocks down the street from me.The simple fact is that these things can and will happen anywhere.
