http://www.glennbeck.com/2013/12/26/counting-down-the-top-glenn-moments-of-2013-exposing-common-core/Common Core is the nationwide education initiative being jammed down the throats of students and parents around the United States whether we want it or not. 45 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have all adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which is funded with money from the likes of Microsoft’s Bill Gates.[Edited on December 26, 2013 at 11:54 PM. Here's a summary of the right-wing thought process on this issue: Obama expressed his approval of Common Core, therefore it's an Obamunist plot to turn our children into slaves for socialism.[Edited on December 27, 2013 at 12:35 AM. Reason : BTW it's an entirely state-level initiative 4 years in the making.

This seems like a Joke thread.I'm waiting for confirmation before posting...

From my partisan joke perspective, I just think it should be the states' responsibility for education.

It isn't a curriculum yet.....it will be though. And will push standardized tests and reduce actual learning even more.
12/27/2013 11:37:10 AM
yeah curricula made by the states or districts, and standardized tests made by states or districts. all the common core does is say "here is what you should know" and lets schools decide how to do it and how to evaluate it (at whatever level the schools are controlled: district, state). it's not a curriculum or test. its what the tea party always pretends to fight for, less federal control and more state or local input. pro-standardization groups are opposed to common core because it is not standardization. EDIT:I don't know if I support Common Core, and there is a big reason why the Tea party wouldn't, but so far the only opposition has been based on incorrect information so I'm going to wait for them to do some reading before posting itI will point out my favorite opposition to it, because I think its hilarious:lots of people opposed to Common Core point to the poor performance on new common core aligned tests. these people just want kids to have high scores, they don't give a shit about what the scores actually mean. poor tests on common core materials mean that the students don't know shit, and haven't, not that they are suddenly 70% dumber than the year before. They are afraid that students will "give up" or be "disheartened" because only 30% passed, and that's a hilarious response.[Edited on December 27, 2013 at 1:30 PM. Reason : .]

wow you people. test scores are not lvalid with the common core. test scores are rarely valid for comparison anyways unless you have standardized education. common core gets the government out of the way and lists the skill students should have. districts, schools, departments, AND TEACHERS then figure out how they are going to teach those concepts. i could teach the same skill 10 different ways and get 10 different scores on 10 different tests. the real world cannot be summed up by a question on a test. common core is not meant to be tested against and probably will not (unless the district is just stupid, which i don't doubt)
12/27/2013 3:56:20 PM
Prior to the Tea Party's involvement, most criticism of Common Core came from leftist teacher unions who were against testing. I therefore find it rather humorous how the two groups are now unlikely allies in the crusade against Common Core.

I'm not sure what is implied by "says the teacher". As if his expertise and profession somehow invalidates his ability to make commentary on said profession.

https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/420755108926730240@neiltyson: Some educators, who are quick to say "These students just don't want to learn”, should instead be saying "I suck at my job”.If it is an educators job to educate, is it acceptable for them to give up on educating?

I don't know too many teachers who do give up on educating...
1/7/2014 10:46:23 PM
I knew plenty that gave up on educating. They didn't leave their jobs at teachers though.FWIW, I think I experienced more teachers like this at the college level.

that's the same way that multiplication and division has been taught since at least before i learned it, that's how you teach the concept. memorizing tables doesn't teach anyone what multiplication and division means, grouping things like that teaches what it means. the only issue i see is that its in 4th grade, and i can't remember when I was learning multiplication and division, but that seems late. however, since she was only upset about the method and not the material, i suspect that she was comparing it to multiplication and division already being taught in 4th grade.
1/12/2014 2:11:25 PM
i learned basic multiplication and division in second grade. i remember that because my teacher tried to tell me that anything multiplied by 0 was zero, but also anything divided by 0 was 0. i told her it should be infinity but she gave me detention for talking back. long division in 4th grade. i remember because i had chicken pox in 4th grade and had to teach long division to myself while i was out.[Edited on January 12, 2014 at 2:16 PM. that's what i thought too, but she didn't care that it was being taught at that level only that it was being taught in that way. which makes me think that its already being taught at that level there, at least to some students, who are now being taught what multiplication and division actually means.[Edited on January 12, 2014 at 2:21 PM. I was taught that grouping strategy, which they started in 2nd grade. That kind of pinko-liberal-hippie instruction is probably why I'm a radical socialist now; it was all just brainwashing disguised as math.[Edited on January 12, 2014 at 11:21 PM. Reason : communists love grouping]

why would the academic standards review commission be in the Dept. of Admin and not DPI?
4/24/2014 3:42:48 PM
^^ hilarious that the lawmakers can't cite any practical academic reasons for not liking the standards other than "it's from the federal government." Seems dumb to setup a new committee to revise the standards, when we already have state gov institutions to look at these things, seems even dumber to use a legislative bill to eliminate the standards, rather than having the experts in DPI, who are trained in instructional issues, review the federal standards and determine what should/could change (something they've likely already done). This is just pandering, these politicians just want to score some political points by looking like they're opposing big government.

One answer to the problem posed in this article is to spend more resources actually teaching the teachers how to implement the standards, as should have been done for the 1989 NCTM standards that revolutionized the teaching of mathematics...in countries other than the US: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/magazine/why-do-americans-stink-at-math.html
