This plan is ridiculous. It is bad enough that it's getting dark when i leave work Nov-Feb. With this plan, I'll be driving home in the dark all times of the year except around the summer solstice May-August. For example in mid-September the sun in NC sets at 7:15. With this plan the sun would be setting right when i leave the office. I could care less about bright mornings, as myself like most people are just getting up and going to work. Evening are so much more bland when there is no daylight. If people are tired of changing the clock (come on is it really that confusion) than we should get rid of standard time and go to Daylight Savings Time throughout the entire year. Without spending time finding the sources, I've read people generally do enjoy the extra daylight in the evening. This person must be from the West Coast.http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/12/tech/cnn10-ideas/?hpt=hp_c2

My proposal: keep time zones, remove daylight savings
12/18/2013 5:26:51 PM
^Also, time zones aren't just arbitrary. They're based on geography/astronomy, although we tweak them a little. That's different from just arbitrarily making shit up on a large scale.Shit if we go that far, we might as well just go to ONE time zone: Zulu.[Edited on December 18, 2013 at 8:11 PM. Reason : ]

24 main time zones... 24 hours in a day... makes sense to me. and I like daylight savings time. i guess it's a hipster thing to not maximize daylight for most folks.

HUR has gone full HURyou should never go full HURI feel like he was a paragraph away from asking where the sun goes at night

I don't get the hate for daylight savings time. Who really cares that the sun is up at 5:15 AM at the summer solstice (if we were to eliminate DST). On the other hand there is so much more productive things or recreational things one could do with the extra hour of daylight we get from March thru October in the evening.[Edited on December 18, 2013 at 10:21 PM. it is impossible to increase hours of daylight by manipulating the clock. get your ass up out of bed if you want to see more daylight.

jesus christ. maximize daylight while awake (and you knew exactly what i meant, troll.)
12/18/2013 11:10:45 PM
actually it's about maximizing daylight during the workday and post-work recreationthat is, it's about shifting when events are scheduled to happen relative to absolute time (UTC)
12/19/2013 12:52:15 AM
It's about not leaving children out in the dark at bus stops. Daylight savings will never go away.

I'd be fine with getting rid of DST. but i don't see any real problems with the current system. it's not THAT confusing or inconveniencing. We're a big ass country, makes sense that we have more than 2 time zones. and really, WHAT ABOUT HAWAII??
12/19/2013 10:32:48 AM
It actually has pretty terrible health consequences, and we lose productivity (read: money) in our economy because of itbetter topic:how should time work in the future with interplanetary travel and exploration? [Edited on December 19, 2013 at 10:58 AM. Reason : .]

12/19/2013 11:19:31 AM
I think we should go the other way and have like 24x60 = 1440 time zones, because you know, time is continuous, not discrete. Heck, make a time zone after every second of the earth's revolution, not just a minute. That's 86,400 time zones.I think that would make life interesting. Just think about flight times, clocking-in at work, TV schedules, etc.Fuck it, make it CVT - Continuously Variable Transmission Time, in other words, infinite time zones.

yes... getting dark earlier is great! I'd much rather it be daylight for several hours before I wake up to go to work as opposed to the evening when I'm able to enjoy it.
12/20/2013 8:20:07 AM
So what is the valid argument for removing Daylight Savings time?Is it the major inconvenience of taking 10 seconds to change your watch by an hour?

The status quo lol? The status quo is people not giving a shit if it is light or not outside because all they do is go home and watch sitcoms and american idol on the couch. As a side note the TV industry is one major of opponent of DST , surprise surprise!!! I on the other hand enjoy the opportunity to go running, biking, and other outdoor activities with the extra hour of daylight during the spring and summer. Some arguments for keeping DST is that especially in the summer it helps synch our natural bio clocks to the Sun, preventing waste of daylight when we'd otherwise be sleeping. The main arguments against DST (even after reading your studies) include-laziness/hassle of having to change clocks twice a year.- Farmers bitching about it being dark in the AM.- People being sleepy the workday or two following the "spring forward" due to losing an hour of sleepBy the way the dude in one of your "sources" is VERY confused (see link below). His argument against daylight saving time is actually an argument FOR daylight savings time throughout the entire year. Apparently he just dislikes changing the clock.http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1284701Here are some pro-daylight savings time sourceshttp://theory.stanford.edu/~amitp/rants/daylight-savings-time/http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/03/090305-daylight-saving-time-facts-history_2.htmlhttp://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/03/in_defense_of_daylight_savings_time.htmlhttp://www.nbcnews.com/id/23523332/ns/business-us_business/t/will-daylight-saving-time-boost-profits/#.UrReTuIvrHc[Edited on December 20, 2013 at 10:14 AM. My only real problem with DST is that it lasts longer than Standard Time now, making it not much of a "standard" anymore.
12/20/2013 7:08:54 PM
there are some scheduling perks, obviously, with DST... There is light until 8pm or so...People want to get rid of it, but nobody can explain the benefit of standard time. I agree with the notion of "fuck changing clocks twice a year", but personally I'd rather be on gmt-4 year round.

12/23/2013 11:56:14 AM
Most people can't just shift their circadian rhythm, they don't ever "catch up" after making the shift. While everyone is on a different pattern, GMT -5 is a better average compromise.
