This plan is ridiculous. It is bad enough that it's getting dark when i leave work Nov-Feb. With this plan, I'll be driving home in the dark all times of the year except around the summer solstice May-August. For example in mid-September the sun in NC sets at 7:15. With this plan the sun would be setting right when i leave the office. I could care less about bright mornings, as myself like most people are just getting up and going to work.

Evening are so much more bland when there is no daylight. If people are tired of changing the clock (come on is it really that confusion) than we should get rid of standard time and go to Daylight Savings Time throughout the entire year. Without spending time finding the sources, I've read people generally do enjoy the extra daylight in the evening.

This person must be from the West Coast.

There's a way to end seasonal clock confusion and eliminate jet lag.

All it would take is doing away with daylight saving and splitting the continental United States in two time zones: East and West, an hour apart.

It's not a radical idea. In fact, changing how we view time is a natural part of progress in society. In the Civil War era, every city in the country had its own local time based on the position of the sun. That was too confusing for train schedules, so the country moved to four time zones in 1883.

But we've evolved since then to an even more connected world. Now we all watch the same television channels and trade on the same stock market. Our lives are more integrated, and a more unified time system makes sense.

Allison Schrager, an economist and writer in New York, made the case for a change in an essay she published before we turned the clocks back in November. Here's how Schrager's plan would work: Eastern Time jumps onto Central Time, and Pacific Time becomes Mountain Time. That would give east coast states brighter mornings and west coast states sunnier evenings.

Schrager told CNN she first thought about it when she commuted to Austin, Texas on a regular basis. She noticed everyone in the Southwest did everything at the same time as New Yorkers, they just called it a different time.

"The whole point of keeping time is coordination. The problem is, there's just so much confusion," she said.

That's only made more complex by daylight saving time, a practice that the United States adopted from Europe in 1918 to save energy. Clocks are set forward in summer to extend afternoon daylight.

However, the vast majority of the world doesn't do it, which makes it hard to coordinate the new, temporarily adjusted times between Asia, Europe and the United States. Plus, there's little proof daylight saving actually reduces energy usage.

Eliminating the practice would prevent the jarring feeling we all get in the fall when the clocks reset and it suddenly gets dark at 4:30 p.m.

The downside? It'll take some getting used to.

But it's less confusing than resetting your watch after a five-hour flight that, on paper, took eight hours one way and three hours the other.

Also, time zones aren't just arbitrary. They're based on geography/astronomy, although we tweak them a little. That's different from just arbitrarily making shit up on a large scale.

Shit if we go that far, we might as well just go to ONE time zone: Zulu.

24 main time zones... 24 hours in a day... makes sense to me.

and I like daylight savings time. i guess it's a hipster thing to not maximize daylight for most folks.

I don't get the hate for daylight savings time. Who really cares that the sun is up at 5:15 AM at the summer solstice (if we were to eliminate DST). On the other hand there is so much more productive things or recreational things one could do with the extra hour of daylight we get from March thru October in the evening.

actually it's about maximizing daylight during the workday and post-work recreation

that is, it's about shifting when events are scheduled to happen relative to absolute time (UTC)

I'd be fine with getting rid of DST. but i don't see any real problems with the current system. it's not THAT confusing or inconveniencing. We're a big ass country, makes sense that we have more than 2 time zones. and really, WHAT ABOUT HAWAII??

It actually has pretty terrible health consequences, and we lose productivity (read: money) in our economy because of it

how should time work in the future with interplanetary travel and exploration?

Two time systems: local time and galactic time. Hell, we sort of already do this when we're talking about time on other planets.

I think you still do a standard galactic time in whatever arbitrary unit. Doesn't have to be seconds. Then all timeframes are relative to that inertial frame.

I think we should go the other way and have like 24x60 = 1440 time zones, because you know, time is continuous, not discrete. Heck, make a time zone after every second of the earth's revolution, not just a minute. That's 86,400 time zones.

I think that would make life interesting. Just think about flight times, clocking-in at work, TV schedules, etc.

Fuck it, make it CVT - Continuously Variable Transmission Time, in other words, infinite time zones.

yes... getting dark earlier is great! I'd much rather it be daylight for several hours before I wake up to go to work as opposed to the evening when I'm able to enjoy it.

So what is the valid argument for removing Daylight Savings time?

Is it the major inconvenience of taking 10 seconds to change your watch by an hour?

An extra hour of daylight in the evening has negative health consequence and causes us to lose productivity??? I've read studies that DST actually encourages productivity and consumer activity. On the other hand getting dark early has been linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder.

The only people I typically here that are excited to go back to standard time are nurses and teachers. Usually the only reason they enjoy "falling back" an hour is so they are not driving in the dark during their morning commute.

The status quo lol? The status quo is people not giving a shit if it is light or not outside because all they do is go home and watch sitcoms and american idol on the couch. As a side note the TV industry is one major of opponent of DST , surprise surprise!!! I on the other hand enjoy the opportunity to go running, biking, and other outdoor activities with the extra hour of daylight during the spring and summer.

Some arguments for keeping DST is that especially in the summer it helps synch our natural bio clocks to the Sun, preventing waste of daylight when we'd otherwise be sleeping.

The main arguments against DST (even after reading your studies) include

-laziness/hassle of having to change clocks twice a year.
- Farmers bitching about it being dark in the AM.
- People being sleepy the workday or two following the "spring forward" due to losing an hour of sleep

By the way the dude in one of your "sources" is VERY confused (see link below). His argument against daylight saving time is actually an argument FOR daylight savings time throughout the entire year. Apparently he just dislikes changing the clock.

there are some scheduling perks, obviously, with DST... There is light until 8pm or so...

People want to get rid of it, but nobody can explain the benefit of standard time. I agree with the notion of "fuck changing clocks twice a year", but personally I'd rather be on gmt-4 year round.

Most people can't just shift their circadian rhythm, they don't ever "catch up" after making the shift. While everyone is on a different pattern, GMT -5 is a better average compromise.
