Charlotte and Western NC does have a smog problem, but I thought most of the problem comes from Ohio air pollution during some time of the year[Edited on December 10, 2013 at 3:56 PM. Reason : .]

Charlotte has its problems - I-77 corridor commuting, lots of coal-fired electrical generation, but we've also sued TVA/Tennessee multiple times over their shit blowing into our state[Edited on December 10, 2013 at 4:17 PM. Reason : we being state of NC]

http://world.time.com/2013/12/09/china-here-are-some-great-things-about-toxic-air/?hpt=hp_t31. Smog unifies the Charlottenian people.2. It makes Charlottenians more equal.3. It raises citizen awareness of the cost of Charlotte’s economic development.4. It makes people funnier.5. It makes people more knowledgeable (of things like meteorology and the English word haze).

The Charlotte metro (Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Union counties along with York in SC) is designated marginally non-attainment for the 2008 ground-level ozone standard (0.075 ppm for 8-hr max avg). NC is in compliance with the rest of the NAAQS except for a few carbon monoxide maintenance areas that will more than likely be good in a few years. But yes, the I-85 corridor can be quite problematic for ozone, as it's usually a result of upwind sourcing and/or perfect weather pattern setup.
