So I just moved back here after being away from Raleigh since before downtown exploded. Glenwood South was there, but not Martin St., Wilmington St., that whole area. That's totally new and foreign to me. Last night I was at a bar in that area and got the feeling that most of the people were not from around here originally (though I know people from around here that hang around there). This one I talked to for about 20 minutes kept talking about how they moved to Raleigh because "it was a blank slate we could turn into a community" and kept saying it wasn't as cool as Madison, Wisconsin where they're from.

It used to be that the transplants were mostly families in Cary and not hip 25 year olds that hang out downtown.

It used to be that I could go somewhere in Raleigh and see a familiar face or two. That hasn't been the case the last couple of weeks (aside from the friends I've been with).

So what's going on here? Are these new people cool? Do they integrate with us natives or just put on NC flag trucker hats and associate with their own kind? Or are all of these people just kids that were in high school when I was last year and I'm just getting old?

Oh yeah. I also said I worked in Durham but lived in Cary and someone asked why I didn't live downtown and take the train to Durham.

wtf.

do you perhaps feel like you stepped into a time machine and when you landed back here things were drastically different?

It's $6.50 to take Amtrak from Raleigh to Durham on the 6:45 train.

Coming home is the problem though, you would have to leave early (2:30) or late (7:45)

You should have went north to the Riverwalk district off of Capital. That's where OG's congregate now.

I totally understand the OP

It's all these god damned carpetbaggers moving ITB (in some cases N. Raleigh) from all those urban rusted out dystopias in the North/Midwest

It doesn't help that all these stupid yuppie magazines keep ranking raleigh (or Raleigh -Durham for the ignorant) as one of the best places to live.

the new people are cool

none of the cool ones wear trucker hats

you'll do better seeing familiar faces if you stick to weeknights

all of downtown is a shitshow on weekends. except slim's. slim's is always amazing.

Saw at least 3 guys wearing hats like that with the NC flag or an outline of the state on it, plus t shirts with the state outline on it plus a bike or whatever, including said Wisconsinite.

So am I to assume anyone wearing NC stuff (aside from college apparel) is new to the state, trying to act like they belong, and probably thinks we're just a rotted husk for them to remake?

You're right, they should just stay up there and let Raleigh wallow in a lack of economic prosperity. Talk about backwards thinking.

Raleigh in the 80s was cool, man.

The Capitol Room was the place to be when you're 5 and going to the Belks downtown with your mom.

Fuck that, they're trying to turn raleigh into the same screwed up unionized socialist hell holes they came from. They're McMansions are shitting all in Jordan and Falls lake, fucking up my fishing. Then they swing their dicks around like they're doing me a favor and complain about how I drive in the snow.

Not sure how i feel about people expropriating the culture. Eat the food, listen to the music, but don't act like that's your language and family.

Some of it is totally made-up to sound authentic and folksy. My family is from Graham County and i never heard anyone say North Cackalacky until I was in Pennsylvania and someone asked if my dad was from there. Dad thought they were making fun of his accent.

As difficult as this may be to believe, people used the term long before the first time you recall having heard it.

This is what happens when your city is one of the only viable places for employment in the country.

People move there! Wtf!

The changes have been pretty crazy tho. I left in 2007 and have been back a few times (first hopscotch fest and a wedding last year)

Yeah, in real NC. No legit sources know where it came from, but no one believes it started in 1995.

Its been around for generations. And its still always been stupid.

I want to see a chart of the past 15 years and the use of "the next silicon valley!" phrase charted alongside the influx of people to Raleigh. They will be very close.

I remember reading the term "cackalacky" in the book "Texas" which was written in 1985
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_(novel)

The term was used in the civil war era in that book (of course it's a historical fiction book so who knows if the term was actually used then.)
