My initial reaction is that it's a privately owned team, and they can do what they want...but that what they should do is to abide by the consensus of what American Indians what (if there is any semblance of a consensus).

If it bothers them, then the considerate thing to do would be to change it. If it doesn't bother them, then it's a white-guilt pantywaist liberal solution in search of a problem.

About a year ago, outside of The Greene Turtle after watching a UFC fight, I found myself in a conversation with a Native American about the name "Redskins". It was more than cordial, and a completely respectful discussion.... But it was clear the guy was venting to me. I saw that he was clearly venting to me because of his stance in the discussion where he was trying his hardest to convince me, someone that made it clear that I agreed with him, that the term was racist.

Generally, I try to shy away from gross generalizations based on one specific life event. But yes...that event more than convinced me that a significant number of Native Americans find the term pretty offensive.

Also, I think his name was George or some shit. He was visiting from New Mexico.

^^ to be fair, this year is not the first time people have found the name offensive. Sure the push back has gained more traction than ever before. But it's not the first time people spoken out against the name.

I think people don't give a shit about the Native Americans.

No way the Washington Kykes would ever be a team that lasted 80 years.

With that being said I'm fine with the Braves and Indians.

Reservations, casinos and fire water aren't enough, we've gotta change the names of our sports teams too? Don't we, as in the American people, already give what's left of the Native Americans a shitload of guilt money every year as is? I feel like if they as a collective whole take the bribe money, they can't bitch about anything.

And yeah, they don't even play in Washington. They practice in Virginia and play in Maryland.

I think they should probably change it. I'd like to see it stay Indian related though.

I'd like to get behind changing it but can you imagine the bitching and moaning? It would last for years, be the exact same tired talking point blah blah blah. It's enough to make me say not worth it.

Redskins got their name from an owner who was a huge racist

http://www.thepeoplespaths.net/articles/redskin.htm

Quote :
" "The word Redskin was taught to me at a very young age, and this is the meaning it has for me.

"I am a Native American. I grew up on an Indian reservation. As a child, the United States Government and the Catholic Church came into our homes, took us away from our families, and forced us into Catholic boarding schools. There was no choice to be had in this matter, you had to go. The Catholic Church with the blessings of the United States Government took it upon themselves to determine that we were savages, and needed to be transformed to fit into their society.

"When my hair was cut short by the priests, I was called a "redskin" and a savage. When I spoke my native tongue, I was beaten and called "redskin". When I tried to follow the spiritual path of my people, I was again beaten and called a "redskin". I was told by them to turn my back on the ways of my people, or I would forever be nothing but a dirty "redskin".

"The only way "redskin" was ever used towards my people and myself was in a derogatory manner. It was never, ever, used in a show of respect or kindness. It was only used to let you know that you were dirty and no good, and to this day still is.

"A long time ago, a group of people who had no knowledge of these facts, and who put no thought into what "redskin" actually meant chose to use this word for their mascot. A new group of people, now being confronted about it, have somehow decided it is their decision to change the meaning of this word to fit their purposes and agendas, but again have put no thought into its true meaning or what this word means to Native Americans." "

http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-redskins-name-only-offensive-if-you-think-a,33449/

Quote :
"A new study published Monday by the University of New Mexico confirmed that the name of the Washington Redskins is only offensive if you take any amount of time whatsoever to think about its actual meaning. “When you hear or say ‘Redskins’ in the abstract, it’s completely harmless, but we’ve discovered that if you briefly pause to remember it’s a racial slur for an indigenous group wiped out by genocide over the course of a few centuries, then, yeah, it’s awful,” said lead researcher Lawrence Wagner, adding that only if you allow the NFL franchise’s name to register in your mind does it evoke the thought of human beings devastated by the forced removal from tribal lands, intentional exposure to smallpox, and countless massacres. “It has the potential to come across as a degrading relic of an ethnocentric mentality responsible for the destruction of an entire people and their culture, but that’s only if you take a couple seconds to recognize it as something beyond a string of letters.” Wagner recommended that the NFL franchise should change their name to something more appropriate and historically accurate, such as the Washington Racist Fucks."

Yep, every time something is offensive to someone else we've gotta make changes. Next thing you know PETA will be petitioning the NFL to change all the team names who have animals as mascots, because you know, it's degrading to animals and offensive to animal lovers. And we'll have to do it b/c heaven forbid someone in this world is offended by anything ever.

you are saying tar heels is derogatory towards white people, well white people support UNC and run UNC and are ok with it.

If Native Americans were the owners and supporters of the Redskins and they made no effort to change the name, your argument would have merit.

most of the people I've seen protesting the Redskins name are white people / non-Native Americans

and by most i mean over 99%

so if you're saying that if a few people find it offensive it should be changed, then fine

i find the word Tar Heel to be offensive, and think those baby blue faggots should change their name to the Sheep

of course its mostly white people protesting, there arent that many native americans in the country!

The question is, do the majority of native americans find it offensive.

the question woulld be, in your scenario, do the majority of white people find it offensive.

But is the question do most Native Americans find it offensive (which I would be generously curious to know)

Or is the question, if some people find it offensive, is that grounds enough that it should be changed

Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon's Mascot Mania

Quote :
"When I was young
Saw football games
At the great big stadium
Could tell the fans
From out of town
By the clown suits they had on

20,000 red cowboy hats
Means cornhuskers to you
Mickey Mouse beans
With tiger ears
Shows you cheer ol' Mizzou
Let's not forget the Razorbacks
From the U. of Arkansas
With plastic pig snouts
On their heads
Soooooeeeeeeing, "How 'bout them Hawgs?"

That's mascot mania

I work all week
At a job I hate
Where everything goes wrong
Weekends what I live for
To your church I belong

I cross the street in San Francisco
When a chump comes out of a bar
Yelling "Forty-fuckin-Niners, man"
With his gold and red jacket on

In Cleveland, throwing dog biscuits
Shows how much you love them Browns
While Bronco fans just hang their heads
When the Superbowl comes around

Raider jacket dollars
Got the White Sox wearin Black
Statues of Joe Paterno
Sold in gift shops at Penn State

That's mascot mania

Don't make fun of religious rituals
In any place
Lord help you if you laugh
While they do this with a straight face

Outside of the United States
It gets even more bizarre
In Tokyo they got a baseball team
They call the Carp

The Salmonbellies are the pride
Of New Westminster B.C.
C'mon Greg Werkman, what's a Hoosier?
And why do they throw chairs?

When Sudbury Ontario's
Hockey team scores a goal
They drag a stuffed wolf
Across the ice
A fan shot at it once, ya know

That's mascot mania

Blue Streak
Horned Frogs
Long Horns
Trojans

Someone better tell Tipper Gore
About the names of these here teams

Tar Heals
Gamecocks
Blue Devils
Crimson Tide

Real Indians
Sick of Redskins
And Tomahawk chops

It seems to me
That to stay mean
These names should change with time

The New York Muggers
Detroit Murders
And Chicago Mob

Boston Bigots
Texas Swindlers
And the L.A. Cops

Miami Drugs
New Jersey Dumps
Take on the Denver Smog

Seattle Fads
New Orleans Hoods
Milwaukee Cannibals

San Diego Jarheads
And the Arizona Drought

That's mascot mania

Go, Carp, go!
Salmonbellies rule!
Hit 'em harder Cops!
But, a hockey team called The Mighty Ducks?

Head explode when Dallas Oswalds
Meet Washington Bribes
Home team band plays Cop Killer [Ice T & Body Count]
When L.A. comes to town

Pittsburgh Polluters
Houston Drive-Bys

Don't stir near the fear

When the Florida Abortion Bombers
Meet the San Francisco Queers

That's mascot mania

Anywhere you go
The games the same old thing
Bet your money on the Bribes
They always win"
