I second Williamsburg. Checkout Barcade (bar with about 40 old school arcade games), Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn Brewery, and Aligator Lounge (free personal pizza for every beer you buy). There's a cool German bar called Rathgast or something like that that's cool. There's a bar called Surf Bar that I thought was really unique - it has a sand floor and a really cool tiki hut / beach theme and they specialize in mojitos - there's like 30 varieties. Astoria (Queens) has great food for cheap and they have some really awesome beer gardens but I'm not sure how popular they are in the winter. Sweet Afton is a good place to look for girls. If you go to Manhattan, check out the bars in the East Village and near NYU.

I feel sorry for you because nyc is a fucking nightmare around xmas/nye. What a-hole schedules a wedding at one of the worst travel destinations for that time of year.[Edited on October 11, 2013 at 8:52 AM. Reason : G]

i really don't understand the appeal of standing in times square for the ball dropi bet it's impossible to find a bathroom

-Go ice skating at Bryant Park (it's free, just pay for skate rental)-Check out the Bier Garten under the highline at The Standard Hotel-Russian Vodka room on 58th street is fun and somewhat unique-I love checking out the window displays at Macy's and Lord & Taylor but during that week it'll be an absolute shit show. If you're around Williamsburg Brooklyn Brewery is nearby. Great beer there.

I never been. So most likely just a one-in-a-life-time experience.

What are you looking for in a hotel? Price range? Q4 is the worst in NYC as far as hotel prices.hit up a speakeasy - Please Don't Tell, Bathtub Gin, Backroom, etcMercury Lounge usually has some pretty good shows230 Fifth for rooftop since it's winterRolf's German Restaurant (if they have their decorations up past Christmas)

^ So far for decent hotels around 220-240 per night. I was wondering if there are any cheaper without going to extreme sacrifice.

I'm just betting "No."The holidays are a horrible time to visit NYC but kind of a nice time to live there. Hit up the night market in Union Square for a cider or hot chocolate some time.[Qualifications: Attended grad school in NYC from 2008 to 2010. Father is frequent traveler and visited often on business, giving me insight into hotel costs.]

No rooms available, but this is my favorite place I've stayed in NYC: http://applecorehotels.com/the-hotel-at-times-square/great location, newish hotel and only $120-$220 per night.

you could stay in Jersey and take the PATH Train inbut that would suckif you don't want the trip to suck then you're gonna shell out the $1000 for the hotel roomstay OUT of Times Square though, unless you get a good deal, because that place is a living fucking nightmare around NYE - the NYPD will be out blocking streets and talking shit to youso look at hotels in Chelsea (or maybe mid-town but there's nothing to do there)actually maybe you could do well with a hotel in downtown Brooklyn

I stayed in a room recently overlooking times square. I made a comment to the front desk lady that the room had a gorgeous view of the ball they drop, it was literally right outside the window. She said the room was $8,000 a night for new years, and you had to book it the night before and the night after, so $24,000 minimum.Ridiculous.

Yea...ok I might have to rethink this over...I'll just send them a fruit basket and watch Dick Clark.

Might be able to swing a decent priced room at the hotels in Gowanus. Pretty easy trip into manhattan.
