I'm curious what they are referring to as "computer hacking." I imagine it's nothing more than "you are doing stuff we don't know how to do and that scares us so we'll call it 'hacking'"
10/2/2013 10:43:51 PM
probably custom virus' and comptuer worms to gain access to an account or something of the like... Or just people who used torrents in a P2P environment, trade it on that site and then gets automatically labeled as hacking, as you probably suspect.

Dread Pirate Roberts, you are being charged with technology crimes and electronic wrong-doings. How do you plea?

If you read the details in the indictment this guy's in trouble for a lot more than just running Silk Road. He allegedly used hired thugs and hit men to deal with trouble causing users on the site including hiring a hitman to kill one user for $120k and claiming he had already had another one killed for $80k.http://gizmodo.com/8-insane-revelations-from-the-alleged-silk-road-kingpin-1440197442

The complaint also notes that Canadian authorities had no record of a homicide in that area on or around that date, so it could have been a scam on the part of those two Silk Road users (who could be the same person), and DPR's remark about having paid much less for a "clean hit" earlier could have been a lie, a lowball tactic; it didn't actually charge Ulbricht in connection with the attempt to call a hit on someone, so the Feds might not have believed they had enough evidence to show probable cause, but still threw it in to show his character isn't as noble as his regurgitations of von Mises would have it seem.

I just found a Federal grand jury indictment from Maryland, with similar charges, returned on 1 October; possibly a similar "true bill" will come from Southern New York (where the aforementioned complaint was filed, on 27 September) in a few days: https://ia601904.us.archive.org/1/items/gov.uscourts.mdd.238311/gov.uscourts.mdd.238311.4.0.pdf

i don't know anything about bitcoin. if it's just a computer file, can you not copy it?
10/7/2013 3:40:52 PM
I don't know about the permission properties involved with, but I assume it's easy to copy, but again just because you can copy it doesn't mean you can open it or bypass any sort of encryption. But I have never used this stuff so I'm not an expert.
