I'm a relatively new Catholic, but I agree, he's certainly using the office for what it's intended to do: lead the Catholic Church.

I like him too, because he is shunning this kind of lifestyle

While the previous pope had several Benzes, this pope's car is a 1984 Renault with 190,000 miles on it.

Seems like this pope is more concerned with including people in the church, instead of excluding people.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765639009/Pope-Francis-I-believe-in-God-not-in-a-Catholic-God.html

Quote :
""This Vatican-centric view neglects the world around us," the pontiff said. "I do not share this view and I'll do everything I can to change it. The Church is or should go back to being a community of God's people, and priests, pastors and bishops who have the care of souls, are at the service of the people of God."

And toward the end of the interview, Pope Francis said: "And I believe in God, not in a Catholic God, there is no Catholic God, there is God and I believe in Jesus Christ, his incarnation. Jesus is my teacher and my pastor, but God, the Father, Abba, is the light and the Creator. This is my Being. Do you think we are very far apart?""

I'm a big fan.

What's concerning is that I do hear people who don't like his approach, who have adopted the dogma of "supply side Jesus" and unsurprisingly have politics that align with your average tea party stooge.

hopefully we'll see a cultural shift among Catholics and other denominations that better align with Pope Francis.

As a mostly former Catholic, I like him. Seems to have the right ideas and to not be part of the "old guard", and cares more about the people than the office.

If it weren't for that whole on-the-brink-of-agnosticism thing I have going on, he'd make me want to start going to church again.

^^^but isnt The Vatican one of the most lavish places in the World? Arent most Catholic churches pretty lavish? Its a bit of hypocrisy, punishing the guy basically b/c he was a media story.

Even the gay thing, its better than saying gays are evil, but he basically said it wasnt his call and then the vatican immediately came behind and said oh no being gay is still bad. He says "who am i to judge?" Who are you to judge? you are the Pope! You are exactly the person to judge for millions and millions of people.

The Church oughta just start selling off its relics right now to shore up the finances of the IOR.

I would say no. Some of the older ones in big cities will have some marble or use gold paint, but it's not like they are decked out in diamonds. None of the churches I have belonged to would be considered lavish by any means (no different than the methodist, lutheran, or baptist churches I have been in).

So a building has to be decked out in diamonds for it to be considered lavish? How many buildings do you know that have diamond-studded walls?

I wouldn't call them strictly utilitarian, but most of the churches aren't lavish. Cathedrals are another story, but most of them were built before modern times.

Even then, you'd be hard pressed to find even the most lavish churches having overly lavish rectories (as far as new construction/acquisition)

"We have created new idols. The worship of the ancient golden calf (cf. Ex 32:1-35) has returned in a new and ruthless guise in the idolatry of money and the dictatorship of an impersonal economy lacking a truly human purpose."

Fuck this oppressive bullshit.

http://m.mic.com/articles/125756/man-who-helped-kill-thousands-of-native-americans-to-be-made-a-saint-by-pope-francis-today

Shame on me for thinking he was different.

Imagine a prominent Muslim cleric making someone from the past who killed 100,000 into a saint. The whole world would explode in an uproar with "terrorist" being thrown around liberally in reference to him and indeed, all Muslims. But I guess Catholics get a free pass, including the Pope.

History is written by the victors, or something like that...

I'm sure many Native Americans and Taino people feel the same way about good old Christopher Columbus every time his name is brought up.
