I'm looking for new remote desktop software. I used to use Mesh, but Microsoft killed that service. I need something that works in spite of firewalls and all that. Based on my limited research, I'm leaning towards TeamViewer since it seems to have a good feature set and is free. Does anyone have any opinions of TeamViewer or a good alternative?

I bought Teamviewer 6 a couple years ago for work and just recently upgraded to 8. I have no real complaints. It was between that and LMI Rescue, but the latter was subscription based.

I've been using LogMeIn for years. Unless that's not the type of software you're looking for.

I mainly use windows RDP through an SSH tunnel to my home network. I still use logmein on occasion though.

My issue with LogMeIn is that there are a few features in the Pro version that the free version doesn't have that I might want. Nevertheless, I know LogMeIn has a good reputation and the free version still has a good feature set and would serve my needs 95% of the time. It's probably my 2nd ranked choice based on my current experience and understanding.

^^ My work firewall blocks ssh connections not coming from whitelisted IP addresses. If I had a static IP address at home, things would be simpler.

You don't have a static ip? I can't remember the last time my ip changed.

They block outgoing SSH connections? So you can't SSH anywhere?

^^ My home IP addresses tends to change when it would annoy me the most. Everything at work is static. I think we only block incoming ssh connections. I'm pretty sure outgoing connections are fine.

^ The firewall whitelist only works with IP addresses... as far as I know. Doing anything with our cisco firewall is like reciting some incomprehensible and arcane magic spell.

So just run an ssh server (bitvise server is free) on your home computer and SSH to it then tunnel the RDP. The bitvise client will tunnel the rdp session for you automatically.

^^^IIRC only grandfathered free accounts can stay free, and even then you have to actually log into dyn.com every month (and no, auto-update clients like in DD-WRT don't count since a few months ago)

^^^ I'm more interested remote connecting to work from home. Thus, the annoyance of SSHing through the work firewall and how I don't want to deal with it.

Teamviewer for external to internal remote desktop sessions and we use RAdmin for internal applications.
