She had just sold her house and most of her stuff, and indicated she would be moving soon. We at first told her we didn't really need her to sign a lease, but she encouraged us to write one up so if/when she left early, her company would buy out the remainder of the lease. We thought that sounded like a pretty sweet deal, so my other roommate's lawyer friend drafted up a pretty standard lease and she signed it. She just told us she is being transferred to Australia, and that her company *might* pay for 2-3 months, but if we want more than that, "we'll have to go up against their legal team". Then, later that night, she tells me all about her $60-80k bonuses and expense reimbursement she is getting for moving over there. My question is, what the fuck does this have to do with the legal professionals at her company? They aren't on the lease, they have nothing to do with this. If SHE wants to be reimbursed for paying off the remainder of the lease, then she needs to take that up with them, AMIRITE?You can't just make an offer and walk out on a residential lease, right?

^^well, I tried to explain her situation so it made more sense (why is someone with so much money renting, from craigslist, with two other people). she's kind of a hippy in general, but I think this was just a matter of convenience. she is single, 35, had sold all her stuff (and her house), and was planning on being relocated soon. so she got a really nice house that is fully furnished with everything she needed, and besides that, she is absolutely the laziest and most inconsiderate person I've ever met (in terms of cleaning up after herself, contributing to the welfare of our home, etc), so she got two built in housekeepers.^we didn't see a need for her to sign a lease because generally our experience with other roommates has been pretty casual, and trusting. She was saying "hey, have me sign a lease, because that will be a great deal for you!" she didn't tell us she was most likely going to be relocated until after the lease suggestion. the ad was for 1 year. I'm applying SC landlord/tenant law...but basically you have to make a reasonable effort to rent out the room. If you can't find a tenant, then she's obligated to pay her share of the rent.You should be able to get a couple months out of her and then find someone to fill in the room. Doesn't sound like a huge undertaking.
