"Kroger said it would finance the transaction with debt and assume Harris Teeter’s outstanding debt of about $100 million. Harris Teeter will continue to operate its stores as a subsidiary of Kroger and will continue to be led by Harris Teeter’s senior management team. There are no plans to close stores. "

So they are going to keep the Harris Teeter name?

Why not? Its a good brand name and it would take a shit-ton of money to convert all of them to Krogers.

I have not been inside a Kroger in a long, long time. They used to be on Food Lion's level of eye appeal, just a generic low end grocer. But i think they've done a lot over the last decade to change their image haven't they?

yeah, Kroger is a lot nicer than it used to be. I was in one a couple weeks ago and was surprised with how big they are. There was a whole section in the middle of the store for housewares. Its almost like Kroger is a middle ground between a Super Target and Harris Teeter

Oh yeah and there was a chinese restaurant inside of the Kroger

it amazes me that Kroger has more money than Harris teeter. I think they aren't any Krogers in Charlotte. I could be wrong

Harris teeter always pissed me off how high their prices were. Feel like I'm bamboozled

Ugh this sucks. The only Krogers near me are the ones in Garner on 70 and the on Six Forks in Raleigh. And they both are dirty and look outdated.

Coincidentally the Carlie C's nearby is nicer.

^^^^^ Harris teeter is a small regional grocery chain, 212 stores is nothing. Kroger has 3,500+ stores

^^^ I know. Harris Teeter has this region on lock.

Harris teeter took over the Lowes Food in my parents neighborhood. Harris teeter is doing the damn thing in charlotte .

when I came to durham I was horrified to see one.

two thoughts:

Harris Teeter's milk is cheaper than Food Lion
Kroger's reputation in the majority of North Carolina is shitty.

I been knew this was gonna happen, I avoided their stock because of this. Some company from overseas (I think from Sweden) was the first serious potential buyer a few months ago.

I do, but I strongly dislike Kroger and rather like HT...so I feel like in the long run this isn't good.

Publix is coming to Charlotte in the next 6 months, so HT was going to get hit pretty hard either way.

^^^ exactly... I think I have been in maybe 4-5 HTs in my life, but I have been in a LOT of Krogers (bada ching). Seriously though, never heard of HT before I moved to Raleigh (they are the NC State of grocery stores one could say), but Kroger is everywhere (in the SEC).

and yes, Publix is who Kroger needs to worry about

Not the biggest fan of Publix...they have a really random selection of produce and their prices are higher than HT. Harris Teeter is really nice down here in Charleston. I usually get my grocery shopping done with a combo of HT and Trader Joe's.

the cool thing about Publix in Atlanta is that they have totally embraced the really dense, urban areas and arent just like "rawr, we need our sea of parking!!" I have one two blocks away that is the bottom floor of a condo building and right next to MARTA. You could drive right by it and have no idea that you just passed a full sized grocery store.

There's a Teeter across the street from a Kroger next to my house. Should be interesting. I really hope Kroger doesn't screw this up. Reminds me of the Kmart/Sears thing and now Sears is shitty.

i rarely shopped at any harris teeters. too got dang expensive for my blood.

krogers are really nice now. even the one in the shitty little town i live near is 1000x nicer than food lion.

but on the real, i'll always be an Ingles man.

Sounds like the Harris Teeter in North Hills in Raleigh.

The Kroger on Six Forks is just as nice as the Harris Teeter in Cameron Village.

no... posting about what I know first hand. The point being that out of the two being discussed, Publix and Kroger, one has embraced the urban market here and the other hasnt as much. And I never said it was only in Atlanta but I haven't been to a grocery store in Charleston to comment on them. Its called logic.

^^^ yeah

Seems like the quality of Krogers varies a lot between locations. Around here, most of them are just a small step above shithole, but I've been to some in Ohio that are glorious.

yeah, noticed that too. May be because the chain itself has been around so long that you have a lot of relatively old, dumpy locations still in use.
