This is where we will post supportive, inspiring, and hilarious things.

I'm going to go buy some patches.

(Seriously though, can we delete this thread? I accidentally pressed something, and it posted. But I wasn't done writing/formatting and coming up with the TWW Quitline rules and whatnot. I kinda wanted to find a pic, too.)

synapse, I'm crippled by vanity, and I don't want to get those smoker lines around my mouth. I went to find a picture to post here, but I can't even look at them without cringing.

Vanity is probably my #1 motivator right now.

If I can get off these things for a month, I'm gonna get my teeth bleached crazy white, wear bright red lipstick, and go around flashing my grill at strangers.

i take it you're not going cold turkey

if you are going cold turkey, make plans not to interact with people if at all possible for 3 or 4 days.

drunk texting is nothing compared to nicotine-rage texting

use Camel Snus instead. kills nicotine pangs, no spitting, is virtually harmless to your health (NIH study linked in smokeless tobacco thread) and it makes your breath minty fresh!

I would recommend avoiding binge drinking completely. Smoking typically goes hand in hand with drinking and if you start getting drunk you'll forget you're trying to quit.

The only real way to quit is to go cold turkey, otherwise having "one or two" here and there will start a cascading effect back to your old habits.

I found out i had elevated blood pressure recently (probably due to excessive salt intake lately and lack of cardio) but just to be sure i'm putting off smoking as well. I'm by no means a huge smoker (on non-drinking days i might have 2-3 maximum) but i can't risk a potential life-threatening health problem.

http://www.wral.com/doctor-e-cigarretes-don-t-help-smokers-kick-habit/12568281/

Quote :
"Doctor: E-cigarettes don't help smokers kick habit
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Although many smokers believe that e-cigarettes can help them kick a stubborn and unhealthy habit, the battery-powered devices still aren't recommended by medical doctors as a viable solution.

E-cigarettes aren't approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a smoking cessation device, and doctors at UNC Hospitals have found that they have almost no effect in helping people to quit smoking.

Chris Coffey, a 32-year-old former smoker who started smoking more than a decade ago, said he tried different ways to quit.

When he saw an online ad for electronic cigarettes, which combine nicotine with alcohol and water solution, he decided to give it a try.

"For me, it didn't work at all," Coffey said.

Adam Goldstein, director of UNC's Nicotine Dependence Program, said the story is similar for thousands of others who turn to e-cigarettes to try and stop smoking.

"All of our patients ask about electronic cigarettes," he said. "All our patients who smoke. There's virtually no evidence that they are effective in helping people to quit smoking."

Goldstein said it's marketing that continues to push people to the devices.

In spite of that popularity, Goldstein said he's concerned about long-term effects of nicotine mixed with the hot vapor.

"It could be several thousand degrees when it hits your lungs," he said. "We know there are short-term adverse pulmonary respiratory effects."

Goldstein and others working in UNC's program do offer up to five different products to help smokers looking to quit.

For the past six months, Coffey has been combining a nicotine patch with Chantix, a nicotine receptor blocker.

"It really helped a lot to take the edge off and to make it a lot more tolerable," he said.

Goldstein said the products offered in Chapel Hill are both effective and better researched.

"We know what the side effects are," he said.

Although FDA-approved smoking cessation aids are only about 30 percent effective, they do give smokers a much better chance at success than if they attempt to stop on their own.

The state offers a helpline for those who are trying to quit. Call 1-800-784-8669 (1-800-QUIT-NOW).

For more resources, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website."

I do feel 10x better since quitting. I used to smoke a pack and a half a day, but I've had ten cigarettes in past two months.......due to drinking. Lol

Still feel great!

I do enjoy the occasional cigar though

from what i see at work, most folks don't switch to vaping nicotine in an attempt to quit smoking. they just do it because it's more convenient, doesn't make you stink as bad, not as bad for you, etc. they like that they don't have to go to a smoking area at work and get chewed by their boss for spending too much time on smoke breaks.

i think its hilarious the best thing big pharma and their drones can come up with about the dangers of ecigs that the vapor is too hot.

cigarette smoke is 900C and ecigs are only 65C

I cold turkeyed it last week and I still feel like my muscles are trying to crawl out of my skin sometimes. It's pretty rough.

Fortunately I'm no longer surrounded by friends who smoke, which was always a problem in the past. In fact now my social circle consists of two groups of people:
1) Africans who poop on the ground but judge me for smoking
2) Americans who will stop speaking to me if I relapse, effectively cutting me off from all conversation and potential for sex

So, that is some cause for hope.

I smoked half a pack a day for 8 years. I managed to quit "cold turkey" while sick as a dog with awful bronchitis. No patches nothing. It was quit or die wheezing. For the first couple of years, I probably bummed while drinking once every couple months. I think all smokers know that song and dance, but it never sent me back over the edge. It actually reinforced quitting because I'd smell and taste ashtray. Seven years from quitting the daily habit, I only fall off the wagon at my cousin's annual Christmas party because everyone gets drunk and freezes their ass off smoking on his front porch.

I know. I really do. And I've never really wanted to smoke at work before. I just chew nicotine gum, and I'm fine. But the gum's not cutting it today.

I feel like a crazy person, and I think I might cry, but I also can't stop smiling about how fucking stupid this is. I don't even wanna smoke. I just wanna stop feeling like a retard. I mean, I'm totally fine being a retard, but feeling like one is unacceptable.

Just fuck it.
