I'm sorry.

New Jersey ain't too bad. The only part that everyone ever sees as they are driving up the turnpike or passing through the Meadowlands on their way to NYC is pretty damn shitty, though.

Hey try not to get addicted to meth while you're there

Plenty of new jersey is fine. Newark is awful.

The Ironbound area (primarily a Portuguese neighborhood) of Newark is pretty cool. Jersey City is great. There are a lot of awesome shore towns, with Asbury Park and Wildwood probably being my favorites. Princeton is really beautiful, and though it's not exactly my style, it's still nice to visit. There are a ton of cool and quirky small towns with great main streets, and a good many of them have rail connections into New York (there are over 200 commuter rail, light rail, and subway stations in New Jersey).

I used to live in Newark when I was a kid. But we had to move cause my mom got a better job at a restaurant across the country. When I got to my new high school, we had a beach party, and I met this hot girl. But her ex boyfriend beat me up pretty good. So I got the apartment complex's maintenance man to teach me how to fight. I ended up getting the best of the bullies in the end.

He really just wanted to watch you wax cars.

Bttt. Got a conference in Newark next month. Will be flying in on 9/11 and have the day free. Should I stay around Newark or hit the Path to NYC? I have never been to New York City before, so how safe is the train and going around Manhattan solo? My hotel has a shuttle to and from the airport and Newark Station.
8/16/2016 5:13:43 PM
^definitely go into the city, don't spend more time in Newark than you have to. Train is fine, as safe as any other big city public transport. If you're worried about it, just go during reasonable hours. Going around Manhattan solo won't really be solo as there are people everywhere...check out some of the New York threads on what to do for your one day

I spent a night there by my self when a flight got cancelled. You will be fine just don't be stupid and fall asleep on the subway like I did. Luckily I woke up on my stop in Harlem to get back to Laguardia

I'm sure some stuff will be happening in NYC for 9/11 remembrances. Have fun!
8/17/2016 10:31:22 AM
Go eat at Valenca restaurant in Elizabeth. Would recommend. A+++

How likely am I to get targeted if I have my camera out in NYC? I take photos all the time and had no issues at all with folks bothering us while we were in Toronto. Had multiple cameras out and on straps and nobody even bumped into me. I have never been to New York before and my boss said I would be robbed blind. Is it that fucking bad? I was planning to take some photos at major public areas during the day. Thoughts?

You will be fine in Manhattan, the only side effect to looking like a tourist there is people trying to sell you stuff and hand you fliers. Not sure about the other boroughs. ]
8/17/2016 9:54:26 PM
No one is going to rob your stupid ass.Just don't wander around taking pictures and stop in the middle of the sidewalk. That is annoying, people got to get to work. [Edited on August 17, 2016 at 10:36 PM. Reason : Ok?]
8/17/2016 10:34:41 PM
yeah you'll be fine. don't sweat it. you do you, ma[Edited on August 18, 2016 at 9:21 AM. Reason : but yeah seriously you stop in the middle of the sidewalk and embarrass me like that i will F you up]

Not likely at all.Your boss is a paranoid moron who also probably advises people not to travel to Europe right now.

nighthawk's boss is probably currently advising someone who is leaving the country soon to put their money into cashier checks, because it is the safest way to travel
8/18/2016 12:16:51 PM
also to carry a fake wallet in your pocket and your real wallet in your sock. probably should wear a money belt to hold some emergency cash.

Yea I think he feels like NYC is still the same place as it was in the 80s.Also I got up with the former coworker and he and I are going to meet up, so I will have a local guy with me. Plane is booked and I'm pumped!
