I'm working with a 5+ year old Garmin depth finder. Touched bottom yesterday on account of it. It's not accurate. Especially in situations when going from deep to shallow water. In another situation yesterday, the finder read 9 feet. I was running probably 15 knots approaching shore. I eased off the throttle, and after the boat came off plane, and the reading dropped to 3.5 feet. Obviously this is unacceptable.Has the technology improved over the past few years? I need to get a nice unit. Something that tells true depth in real time. All suggestions appreciated. For an 18ft Wellcraft center console w/ 150 Yamaha.

How deep is your garage?

^ No garage. On a lift Spring-Fall and kept under a carport during the Winter.

Sounds like you are having transducer errors. Is yours mounted on the transom or is it "thru-hull"? If it's mounted on the transom make sure it wasn't bumped and needs adjusting.
