White bread, tomato steaks, Duke's mayo, and salt = best summer sandwich ever.

I think you had me at duke's.

Probably my favorite sandwich ever. Fresh garden tomatoes make this sandwich divine!

As long as you eat it right away. If you make a sandwich with tomatoes and pack it to eat later, blahhhhhhhhh. Soggy bread!

I worked at a subway in high school. I learned many useless things there. but the one key takeaway was that you're a damned idiot if you get tomato on your sandwiches at a restaurant.

no - tomatoes in bulk are fucking disgusting. the rotten nasty shit right next to the few good ones surrounded by mealy ass tomatoes. restaurants will cut out the shit parts and serve the rest.

i'm sure if you go to a really good place, you don't have to worry. but any chain restaurant of any kind? fuck that.

if the sandwich is fresh with lots of other ingredients, i find tomato barely noticeable but tolerable.

if the sandwich is older than a few minutes, you stand a good chance of your bread or other ingredents getting soggy due to the tomato.

cost/benefit analysis says: NO TOMATO

watery, grocery-store quality tomatoes? not worth my time.

Good, meaty tomatoes? Yes please.

My main rule is that the tomato has to be added to the sandwich cold, regardless of whether the sandwich is served warm/cooked or not.

Haha dis be true though, that's for sure. I've worked at a lot of non-chain sandwich places even, and US Food Service delivery tomatoes are nasty little things. Everyone loses.

Is it tomato season? Has anyone had the season's first tomato sandwich? Was it everything Tom Robbins hoped it could be?

I think mayo is gross. It doesn't really taste like anything in particular and its just sandwich lube.

I enjoy tomatoes, but not on a sandwich. If I order a sandwich that comes with tomato slices, I pull them off, sprinkle salt and pepper on them, and eat them separately first.

The problem is refrigerated tomatoes get mealy and are gross.

So you need to be careful

We have two different mayos in the house. Dukes for me and Hellman's for my stupid yankee wife.

I like dukes because that is what I grew up on. But since I can't get it out here I stick with the Kroger brand which is similar. As long as it's not miracle whip then I'm down.

I like both mayos, though they have different applications.

However, on tomato sandwiches the only answer is Duke's

Also - I avoid tomatoes on sandwiches unless they're homegrown. Those store bought or fast food tomatoes are always just mealy and tasteless, so hard pass on that.

mayonnaise is mayonnaise.

miracle whip, however, is not mayonnaise and can die in a fire.

Only in the past few weeks have I started eating tomatoes.. They're not as bad as I thought for ~30 years. I'd still prefer them thin sliced (or diced in other things) though.
