An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Our society needs more people to engage in preventative medicine.
5/15/2013 12:27:04 AM
So much respect.

It seems a little over the top. Couldn't she have just gotten more regular screenings (monthly or quarterly) to continue checking for breast cancer? I would think that even a 13% chance of not developing breast cancer and avoiding massively invasive surgery would be worth trading more regular checkins/mammograms/etc.The ovarian cancer risk I would actually be more preventative with, mostly because it seems like a lot more difficult cancer to routinely check for.

got some big ass titties

You should also factor in that her mother died of breast cancer. I'm sure that was a huge part of the decision for her.Also,http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2013/05/14/angelina_jolie_breast_cancer_surgery_the_actress_discusses_beauty_after.html[Edited on May 15, 2013 at 6:48 AM. Reason : ]

Never thought she was attractive and now she has no tits. Pass.
5/15/2013 7:18:10 AM
False. This procedure has taken 3 months of surgeries and recoveries. Not only did she have the breast removed to prevent breast cancer, but she had the reconstructive surgery for fake breasts at the same time. So her breasts will likely be the same size, they'll just be fake instead of real.
5/15/2013 7:42:36 AM
didn't someone on TWW either contemplate this or get this done?
5/15/2013 7:52:49 AM
Her boobs started to sag after the kids. She wanted to get them done, but was worried about seeming vain. Now people are talking about how brave she is for getting a boob job. Great success.
5/15/2013 7:54:33 AM
^FTW

so brave

My step mom had this done for this very reason
5/15/2013 9:04:25 AM
it's great that she talks about how expensive the brca test is (about $3,000). My mom has ovarian cancer and I'm going to get tested one day (when I can afford it) and if it comes back with 87 % chance or even 65 and above, I'd get my ovaries out faster that you can say "sunny-side up" [Edited on May 15, 2013 at 9:20 AM. With my aunt (maternal) having been diagnosed with breast cancer this past month (she had her lumpectomy on Monday), my mom actually sat me down on Saturday and talked about me getting genetically tested as her drs recommended that my cousin get it done. My maternal grandmother had breast cancer twice, and my maternal great grandmother died from it. So at my next appointment, I'm going to talk about my risks and my aunt's current diagnosis to see what my dr thinks. So this op-ed couldn't have come at a more poignant time in my life. Kudos to Jolie. She definitely has people talking--although some of the comments on various new outlet facebook shares and the comments under her op-ed itself were...rude. So I really enjoyed Linda Holmes' response on NPR http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2013/05/14/183926927/yes-angelina-jolies-op-ed-matters

I am in a similar sounding gene pool as you, elkaybie, that is why I might go get checked out, too. I need to see what my insurance will help with.
5/15/2013 9:41:36 AM
A very close family friend had her breast reconstruction surgery yesterday. She was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago and had a double mastectomy. It's been a long haul. I'm glad that Angelina Jolie came out with her story when she did.
5/15/2013 9:43:01 AM
who gives a fuck?
5/15/2013 9:44:53 AM
I do.
5/15/2013 9:48:32 AM
^^ Women, people who care about women, etc.
5/15/2013 9:49:54 AM
Women. Women give a fuck. And men should too since the breasts you love are attached to those women.
5/15/2013 9:50:02 AM
lol, I love that you put it that way instead of the women you love have breast

no one is calling her speciallots of women have made this decision and NO ONE knows about it to even think about getting educated on the subject...she was able to use her celebrity platform to get people talking about the issuethat's a great thing in my book
5/15/2013 10:05:51 AM
^agreed.
5/15/2013 10:07:49 AM
I think that it does a great deal for public awareness when a high profile celebrity comes out with their story. I think that it also tells women (young and old) that that you and your beauty is more than just your breasts. It's actually a great struggle for a young woman to deal with the thought of losing her breasts and ovaries -- the very things that make them a woman. For a woman who is prized for her beauty to publically come out and say that she chose her health over her breasts is a powerful thing. It doesn't make her special, but it is important that her story is told because so many will listen and some of those who listen need to hear her story.

Cristina Applegate, Kylie Minogie, Sheryl Crowe have come out publicly about their mastectomy due to the gene.
5/15/2013 10:23:13 AM
I imagine that it's easy to say that until you're faced with the prospect of living without your breasts.
5/15/2013 10:24:25 AM
You're right. They should probably just choose to die so that they don't raise any children who don't value themselves outside of their physical appearance. We are talking about titties. You can get implants. Its not like she's getting a leg cut off or part of her brain removed.I'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

i just love how EVERYONE is a hero now. Before, you had to be a kid with cancer to be called a hero; then you simply had to have cancer to be a hero; now all you have to do is mutilate yourself without much thought because you think you might get cancer in the future and youre a hero
5/15/2013 10:26:30 AM
and Angelina Jolie is by no stretch a "young" woman
5/15/2013 10:27:38 AM
I am bored by this story and annoyed that it's news.Did people really not know about this option?
5/15/2013 10:27:55 AM
It's not news. Its not new or interesting. If this was rosie o'donnel no one would give a fuck.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.
5/15/2013 10:28:44 AM
Yeah. so many other celebrities came out publicly on interviews. Why does she get put on a pedestal?
5/15/2013 10:28:54 AM
its news because the white house is fuckin up
