I have taken the bus. I missed my flight home and there wasn't another one for 14 hours so I decided to take the overnight chinatown bus and sleep the way back. First, it will be late, like hours late. It will take another hour to board. Secondly, I've never seen a bigger collection of people I don't want to be near aside from the DMV or a Golden Corral. Every woman on the bus will have at least one baby. Every man on the bus will be old, creepy and look extremely eager to molest anyone they can get alone. Finally, the stops will be perfectly spaced out the distance it takes for the last baby on the bus to stop crying. This insures that when the bus loads back up again you'll be set up for a whole new batch of screaming. The floor will have food on it, the bus will pick up and drop off in the worst neighborhood of whatever town you're in, and you run a pretty good chance of your driver falling asleep. So my recommendation is take it only if you have to. I'd rather rollerblade on the interstate to get to NY.

Some of them are really nice. Some of them are like ^^. Research whatever company it is first to make sure the bus isn't going to explode or get shut down by the feds before your trip. https://www.google.com/search?q=Chinatown+bus+shutdown[Edited on April 30, 2013 at 10:34 AM. Reason : .]

i hopped on a bus last summer in Harlem. Yeah it was full of different people in a different world than im used to, as i observed while pounding my 40 of high life at 7AM. I like that nobody even looked at me weird.

I took one. It was fine. My driver would not allow food or drink on.. which pissed off several loud people which was kind of funny. Stopped at a rest stop midway. Don't remember many babies.. it made good time to NYC considering some traffic on 95. Was great deal for 20 bucks per person.

The chinatown bus is alive and well http://www.gotobus.comI used it quite a bit when making my transition from Raleigh to NY (and might consider using it next week)Firstly, the CONS:You're basically boarding a buss with the lowest tier of people around (Fiscally & Morally). Once you except that, you're fine. Take some soundproof headphones and go to sleep, you'll wake up in NY. The return bus to Raleigh leaves around 11pm and arrives at 6 or 7am.Also The drivers are assholes, which is understandable.. because if I had to deal with the type of clientele that they did, it would eventually get to me too.Now for the PROS: The bus leaves at 1am and arrives at 9am. It actually gets there faster than if you were driving yourself.. and you get to sleep the whole way.Its only $60 each way, so what? you have to sit in the ghetto for an over night trip? if you cant handle that, then you shouldn't be going to NY.. there are much more interesting people on the subways. Also, most of the passengers will smoke(weed), eat(junkfood), or drink(liquor) untill they pass out 3 hours into the ride.. they wake up for gas station stops only a total of 2 (once in VA, once in NJ)The driver consistently does 80-90mph I don't know how he gets away with it..and they are always on time. If they say "we'll be there at 7am" he litterally means, you'll be stepping off the bus and grabbing your luggage at 7am (not in jersey, within view of Manhattan by 7am)so its up to you.. If there's a concert or music festival in NYC you want to catch, or if you just want to do a weekend in Manhattan on the cheap.. its worth it, especially if you have a couch to crash on while you're up here (couchsurfing.org)[Edited on April 30, 2013 at 12:02 PM. also the pickup & dropoff locations in Raleigh are hairy at best. One frequently used pickup spot is the parking lot of the Mongolian Grill on Buck Jones Road. The other is a gas station on South Saunders..

I have used Megabus (from DC) probably 5 times and have been satisfied with each one. We used an "off brand" bus to go to PHI (From DC) one time and it was a disaster. We managed to miss our scheduled one and they put us on the next one (but the instructions were unclear due to the language barrier). The driver stopped on the side of 95 every 10 miles for some strange reason.

How does a guy get 6 years for falling asleep and killing people and people that are drunk and kill people get way less if any in some cases?
4/30/2013 12:17:40 PM
I've repeatedly taken the Megabus http://www.megabus.com throughout the northeastNYC to DCNYC to PhillyNYC to BostonNYC to Atlantic City (serviced by Academy coaches)and Bolt Bus to Baltimoreit leaves from Durham and connects to DC then you catch another bus to NYClooks like it runs about $40 each leg these days
4/30/2013 12:20:02 PM
I used to take the Chinatown bus, then I discovered that for the same price or maybe just a little bit more money you can take Megabus, Bolt Bus, or Greyhound and get all of the following perks:1) Leather seats2) Power for every seat3) Wifi (shitty, but exists)4) Legal5) Not disgusting6) No major history of crashes or the crazy guy next to you cutting your head off and eating your eyeball
4/30/2013 12:47:18 PM
once this guy sitting next to me on the chinatown bus went into seizures.. like seriously.. he was spitting up drool, and his eyes were rolling in the back of his head.everyone looked at me like 'DO SOMETHING!!" the driver of the bus said "HOLD HIS HEAD UP SO HE DOESN'T CHOKE"I just sat there and looked at him.the bus driver pulled over in bumfuck VA, and we waited an hour for an ambulance.he refused the ambulance (coherent at this point) because he didn't want to end up in a hospital in the middle of nowhere with no money to get away..Then the ambulance left, he sparked up a cigarette and everyone started loading the bus again.as I passed him I said "you know those cigarettes are going to kill you right?"and that was that. still made it to NY on time amazingly

Cheap buses are very risky. The reason these bus lines offer very low fares is because they skimp on maintenance and their drivers are often woefully unqualified. It's scary. I've done a fair amount of work on the products liability lawsuit side of these things, and after that I told my girlfriend she was not allowed to ride the bus again. The problem isn't the buses themselves, but without competent drivers and proper upkeep it's too risky. I think there was an entire line that got shut down somewhere in the Northeast recently because they failed multiple inspections.

lol, ive said this same thing about CATS before.just shit yourself like everyone else and you wont be bothered.enjoy the ride!

Well you're all poor if you're willing to put up with 12 hours of homeless people. I'll be flying from now on, and I'll buy a hotel room if I miss a flight. Enjoy getting vomitted on or getting herpes in your sleep.[Edited on April 30, 2013 at 1:36 PM. Reason : ]

I'm not travelling alone. I drove to NY last fall and it was fun but I don't know if I want to do it again already. I'm gonna be riding in driving a van to NY on tour later this year. I really love driving but I am kind of a control freak when it comes to driving long distances because I think I'm exceptionally observant / good at it.I don't want to pay for plane tickets to go to NY for basically no reason. I'd look into Amtrak if you don't mind paying a little bit more. The big problem with that is that both trains from Raleigh are during the day, so you don't have the advantage of a red eye trip like the bus. Aside from that, though, it's by far the most pleasant way to travel between Raleigh and NYC. I've made the trip many times both by train and driving. The tolls and traffic (Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC) make driving brutal. I've only taken buses between NYC and DC, but they are not very comfortable for me due to lack of leg room (same as a plane) and constant stop and go in traffic.
4/30/2013 2:09:03 PM
Yeah the tolls are a bitch. I hate driving on the NJ Turnpike. I see people die every single timeI'm Krallum and I approved this message.
