I would assume free meals will be provided

if you're dirt poor and don't feel like working for a living, I suppose this would not be the worst thing to do with your life

of course, the ship doesn't depart until 2022, so you've gotta find something to do in the meantime (i.e the next 10 years)

im down for this

unless i find a reason legitimizing my decision not to commit suicide when I was 11. Then I'm not down for this and you are a terrible person

I think the idea behind this is makes sense, i just don't think mars is the right candidate for it.

Until we find an actual celestial body capable of supporting life (habitable zone, liquid water) then there's no point in sending a colonization mission. But since any exoplanet would likely be 20+ light years away, even with a realistic propulsion system it would have to be more of a generation ship in which it would require several hundred years just to reach it.

Extra-solar colonization is for suckers.

O'Neill cylinders or other space settlements are where it's at.

It makes perfect sense, even if it's not as sensible as another mission.

You can't learn all the variables involved with colonization until you try it.

These Mars colonists will have an extremely tough time (if this isn't a joke or doesn't otherwise fail), and the lessons learned (most likely from their deaths) will be critical in designing any other long-term colonization mission.

It's also fantastic that we're enough seriously discussing this...

On a related note, why don't we do a mission where we just dump a bunch of biological material onto Mars, and see what happens? LIke molds and plants known to thrive in colder dry climates? So what if we mess up 1 planet? Seems like it'd be interesting...

I would so do this if I was single.

I might still apply.

I read all the pages on their site, and it sounds very very tough, especially the journey there.

This shit isn't gonna work. The project and company will fail long before 2022.

Silly puns in news articles, this one was resistible.
