Say you're sitting around a conference table with 15 co-workers, waiting on someone (that no one has met before) for a meeting to start. Given the below situations, what do you do when that person enters the conference room. Do you stand up/should everyone stand up? Anything else? 1 - Someone higher up in your company (eg bosses boss) - male2 - Someone higher up in your company (eg bosses boss) - female3 - President/CEO of your company - male4 - President/CEO of your company - female5 - Salesman - male6 - Salesman - female7 - Prominent government official - male8 - Prominent government official - female[Edited on April 5, 2013 at 9:04 AM. If it was Japan, everyone would bow individually. Here in America, we wave from our seats and continue to snack on the candy on the conference room table, while checking twitter from our smart phones.

standing oviation with annoyingly sarcastic clapping, regardless of the person's position

Everyone turn around to look at the new guy and tell him/her that they are late.

I usually don't see anyone stand up. Just a glance over to acknowledge someone entered the room, and general verbal welcoming to the meeting.Maybe we are too casual where I work

I'd be too busy checking email or posting on TWW to notice.

i've never even considered that scenario where i work. i suppose there is very little courtesy. should there be? are you more comfortable in a work environment where you stand up, etc when someone superior walks into the room? or is it more comfortable for you to be somewhere that very little recognition is given to someone superior? (other than, "only say ___, ___, & ___ and definitely don't say anything about ___ because district supervisor so & so is coming today") or is there some kind of happy medium?

I would just like it if my technologically inept coworkers would put their phones on "vibrate" during meetings...Or realized that once their phone starts ringing from a call, that you can push the button on the side to make it stop ringing. Jesus tittyfucking Christ.

If other people go to stand up, I'll stand up. If everyone stays sitting, I sit.

Is the entire room on a fancy date with this person and is she female? If yes to both of those, then yes.If no to one of those, then no.

If its a client I will stand up to shake their hand, otherwise just acknowledge and say hi. If its a colleague or superior I don't see often or havent seen in awhile I would also stand up to shake their hand.gender would not change any reactions [Edited on April 5, 2013 at 10:11 AM. Reason : .]
