NC Republicans made it into VICE News!
...and this is what they think of our state

http://www.vice.com/read/my-state-wants-to-establish-an-official-religion
Quote :
"As the Atlantic Wire notes, this bill is going to fail. On the off chance that it passes, the federal courts will overturn it, laugh in the faces of Warren and Ford, then maybe give them a swirly. What the bill will do, however, is set back the reputation of North Carolinians yet again, and give the rest of the country another reason to point and laugh at the backwoods religious nuts who live there. And that’s unfortunate, because while the state is overrun with Christians, most of the ones I’ve met and grew up with don’t subscribe to the extreme ideology that drives people to draft bills like this one. The Republicans supporting this bill are part of a new breed, rabid and unwilling to compromise with anyone who doesn’t see things exactly as they do. While those Christian extremists (and that’s exactly what they are) are a minority, they make a hell of a lot more noise than their more moderate counterparts, which puts all Christians at risk of looking like a bunch of raving lunatics."

Cutting higher ed funding, putting laymen ideologues to run science-based committees, putting thoughtless plutocrats in charge of the budget, disregarding the ROI of research... the list will go on.

I never would have thought they could be this bad, but I guess i learned my lesson for next time.

It is just the way our system is. We are already a divided country and it wont take to much for a Spanish Civil war type thing to happen in the near future, IMO.

Just imagine how they feel when the Dems are in control. It is the same thing but different, everybody clings to their side. It's silly.

^ yeah, but the democrats don't piss on progress and education the way the republicans do. Both sides are overly beholden to corporate interests, but only once side tacitly caters to the people who insist the earth is only 5000 years old.

Until we get rid of religion and people believing in fairy tales, people are gonna keep insisting their ideal fairy tale is better than someone elses. I generally side with a lot of republican beliefs but the religious mumbo jumbo is not one of them.

Atheism: The belief that nothing came from no where and then nothing magically exploded for no reason creating everything and then everything magically rearranged itself for no reason into self replicating bits and then dinosaurs.

Seems legit.

I'm assuming this was dems, but a california judge just ruled you can't use your phone GPS while driving.

There is some validity to the argument that minimum wage laws can be counterproductive, to an extent.

Neither of these undermines society in the long run like putting a strangehold on higher education like the Republicans have done.

But when you look at the growing wealth gap, that the Republicans are completely blind to, and democrats are too afraid to attack (because they think people are more conservative than they really are: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/03/04/one-study-explains-why-its-tough-to-pass-liberal-laws/), it's pulling teeth to change this. This would go a long way to boosting the economy, because it would mean more people have the ability to be self sufficient and learn new things to perhaps make new products/businesses.

The voting shit is fucked up and they have the nerve to call it "Equalize Voter Rights". The entire legislation is a fucked up and transparent attempt to curb exactly the kinds of voters who would take them out of power in the first place.

Fuck every last one of those pieces of shit.

Quote :
" An N.C. House lawmaker is equating any prayer to the Islamic God with terrorism.

In an email exchange with a constituent, Republican state Rep. Michele Presnell of Burnsville was asked whether she was comfortable with a prayer to Allah before a legislative meeting. Presnell responded: “No, I do not condone terrorism.”

The first-year lawmaker who represents a district in the North Carolina mountains is a co-sponsor of House resolution 494, a measure asserting that North Carolina can establish a state religion. She did not return a call for comment Monday about the string of emails obtained by Dome.

“The famed ACLU is telling Rowan County they may not pray before commissioners meetings,” Presnell wrote to Britt Kaufmann, a constituent. “We pray in Raleigh before our legislative meetings, U.S. Congress prays in Washington DC, why can they not pray?”

Kaufmann replied: “Yes, I do understand that the ACLU is suing Rowan County and I think they have clearly articulated why they are not comfortable with prayer before the commissioners meetings. I wanted you, as my representative, to know that I do not think the proposed bill is a good solution to that problem. … Would you be comfortable with a public prayer to Allah before a legislative meeting in Raleigh?”

Presnell equated Islam to terrorism and added, “We just need to start taking a stand on our religious freedom or it will be whisked away from us.”

The email exchange ends with Presnell telling her constituent: “No, you are wrong. Have a good day.”

Her stance appears to differ from that of the primary sponsor of the bill, Rep. Harry Warren, a Salisbury Republican, who later apologized for the resolution’s poor wording and how it embarrassed the state."

Rep. Ellmers won partially on funds raised through attacking muslims. If US Reps from NC can win with that kind of message, it's hard to imagine it'll cause any trouble for state level Reps. The really scary part is that it's folks like Rep. Ellmers and Sen Berger considering challenging Senator Hagan next year for the US Senate seat to work along side Burr.

Republican logic:

- auto insurance? yes! seize their cars if they don't have it!
- health insurance? no! we can't force people to purchase that! what if they can't afford it?

i'm a fan of the car confiscation bill with just the one change i would need that i noted before. currently the bill requires that you still pay for the towing, processing, and storage even if you are acquitted or charges are dropped. if you are innocent or the state can not make their case and drops the charges, you shouldn't have to pay this.

Who is going to pay for all of the extra government employees required to run a large scale towing program?

I also find it ironic that they want to tow your vehicle if you get charged with an insurance lapse, but not DWI. Who do you think is a greater threat to public safety? I think the guy that got arrested driving drunk 2 hours ago and just walked out of jail looking for his car.

if you can't afford insurance, you can't afford to drive. think of it as a required part of the equation, like gasoline. yeah it sucks, but if you get laid off and can't afford gasoline you can't afford to drive. now replace gasoline with insurance.

liability insurance is not very expensive, its a hardship if you are laid off or really poor but so is everything else about owning a motor vehicle (maintenance, gas, licensing, property taxes, etc...).

you are looking at insurance as an add-on, something to include with car ownership when you can afford it but you need to think of it as a necessity like gasoline. it sucks if you can't afford gasoline, but if you can't afford it you don't get to drive.

The republicans should not be introducing this bill. It is not small government, it is creating bloat and bureaucracy.

Also please note the GOP is trying to make it legal for insurance companies in NC to raise rates up to 7% a year without approval, at the same time they add draconian penalties for not having insurance.
http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/04/10/2814832/amended-nc-auto-insurance-bill.html#storylink=misearch

Who do we not just let the insurance companies make the laws?

It's simple and has already been pointed out. If you can't afford minimum car insurance, you can't afford to drive.

Depending on where you live, driving is either the #1 or #2 household expense (housing is usually #1).

All the more reason to invest in better public transit (which this legislature of course hates, though McCrory at least used to be a big supporter) and better land use policies.
