Thinking about trading in my 2005 accord on something a little more fun. Got 20-30k as a budget, and I prefer used cars. Any suggestions? I am fat, so it has to be roomy. . Also has to be 4 door. I was looking a some used Infinity G37x cars, and they seemed to be decent, but I haven't test driven it yet.

How fat? BMW 3-series sport seats are not fat friendly (the 5-series sport seats are though).
4/1/2013 10:46:48 AM
Im real fat, like fat albert kinda fat.I was looking at a 5 series, so maybe Ill test drive that.
4/1/2013 10:50:02 AM
The non-sport seats are flat enough to be forgiving, but its a fairly tight cockpit for large dudes. If you can swing a 5-series its a much larger cockpit and seat. I had to go with the f10, I'm not that big but I'm tall and my shoulders and hips were wide enough that the 3-series sport seats were not comfortable for long trips (they were great for short trips though, nice and grippy).

Gonna test drive a 528 XI tomorrow. And see how that goes.

The Infinity is roomy...cause that was the one reason I liked the nissan...and I suggest comparing the two cars. The 2012 crosstour might be fun as a v6 with the sunroof option.

I ended up buying the 528xi. Thanks for all the suggestions.

It's a 2010.Thanks for the suggestion on the 5 series, dtownral. It's got the tech gizmos to make me nerdgasm and enough sportiness to make it feel fun. I know this isn't a performance car by any stretch of the imagination, but compared to the accord I've driven for 6 years it's a completely different world.

in your case, awd is not gonna helpit's just going to burn more fuel dragging the awd system around
4/4/2013 10:32:44 AM
^exactly.^^all you're gonna do is burn up more fuel. Congrats. FYI AWD isn't going to help you stop or turn any better in snow/ice than a 2 wheel drive vehicle.
4/4/2013 10:43:09 AM
Well that blows a little. Not much I can do about it though.
4/4/2013 10:44:43 AM
good thing you did plenty of research before making a high dollar purchase...

It's a sweet ride and he'll enjoy it. That's all that really matters. Extracting every bit of performance out of a car is great, but AWD is pretty damn sweet the first time you find yourself actually needing it. Besides, if he were really interested in performance he would have gotten the 535 (my choice!), 545, or 550.I heard there were a ton of cars that couldn't make it up the mountain at Snowshoe the last time I was there. Imagine driving hours and being denied just a few miles away from your destination. I was staying in a cabin at Slatyfork and I barely made it. I had a difficult time making it over the Marlinton pass and the next 10 miles or so were very sketchy. The ~1.5 mile gravel road going up to the cabin was barely passable and I got stuck about 30' from the driveway (I made the mistake of stopping while trying to figure out where to park). All it took was a push from two friends and I was good to go. I really don't think most people would have made it in a FWD car and I don't know that I would have made it in a similarly configured RWD car. I had to use a lot of momentum and had a difficult time keeping it out of the ditch going up that gravel road. If you drive enough and don't rent a truck every time things become questionable you're going to find yourself in these situations eventually. In my case I thought I'd get there before the storm (friday) and I knew it was going to be sunny on Saturday and Sunday so the drive home would be fine. The storm blew in a couple hours early and I was running an hour later than planned. I should have driven my truck, but I really thought I'd be fine before I left the house for my 6 hour drive. I would have loved to have been in an AWD Bimmer for that drive. Shit happens. It doesn't hurt to be prepared.[Edited on April 4, 2013 at 11:37 AM. Reason : l]

tire choice makes a bigger impact in adverse weather conditions, than drivetrain configurationso, once or twice a year is not gonna help the average joe with awd and a set of all seasons they'd be better off with a regular car and a set of snow tiresthat being said, drive whatever the fuck you wantbut do your best to make informed decisions
4/4/2013 11:42:00 AM
By the EPA ratings its a difference of 0.2gal per 100 miles for AWD in a 528i with autoAverage gas price in NC is currently $3.599/gal, so a difference of $0.72 per 100 milesAverage mileage for a male 20-34 is 17,976 miles per year, if he is an average driver getting AWD cost him an extra $129/year.This is making an assumption, but if you can afford a 2010 528xi, the $129/year isn't breaking the bankso in other words: stop hating. of recent new car purchases I've seen here (other being a Mazda 3), he got the better car so far[Edited on April 4, 2013 at 11:45 AM. All I do know is that it would take a lot to wipe the smile off of my face when I am driving it. I spent 2 hours last night tinkering with settings and controls, and enjoyed my commute today more than ever.I thought I would be more crucified by the garage over the decision to get an automatic, more so than the AWD.
