"It appears a water main broke in Santa Anna where our system is hosted so all water to the computer center was turned off which resulted in the air conditioning shutting off. They must wait for the city to complete repairs before the MLS systems can be restarted. All accounts that do not host their own systems are down."

"Our system and property tax records were offline. This incident affected 75 systems and 375,000 customers countrywide.

In the first incident, a water main burst severing water to the building’s cooling system. This resulted in excessively high internal temperatures which triggered a shutdown of all computer systems. In the second incident, two fire alarms malfunctioned resulting in another automatic shutdown of all systems. Once the disasters were dealt with, immediate reboot procedures were initiated. This building is a four-story data center with hundreds of computer servers and it can take in excess of 10 hours to restart all the systems.

The system is located in a telecommunications center in Santa Ana, CA, which incorporates many redundant systems in the event of emergencies. The building has three redundant access points to the Internet, battery back-up and an on-site generator should there be a loss of external power. In addition, the building rides on 24 shock absorbers, allowing the building to withstand serious earthquakes. Regretfully, there were no contingency plans for providing alternative water sources to the cooling system. The building owners are now exploring solutions."

Anyone ever thought of off-site redundancy?
