My next job won't be in an area with FIOS... But maybe within 6 months, I could request a transfer to a different city where FIOS is available.

how many of you are using a DOCSIS 3.0 modem (since it seems that most providers don't support speedboost or turboboost or whatever on newer modems)?

No FIOS here in Denver, so $74.99 for 50/10 ain't too shabby I guess?

^^^i dont really see whats so important about UL rate if, like me, you dont either streamcast, upload huge files, play lots of online games that require large data throughput, etc

I would post my TWC speedtest numbers, but they do that power boost bullshit for the first sixty seconds of every file download specifically for the purpose of beating these things, I'm sure of it.

It'll tell me I'm getting 12 or 13 megs down, but I never actually download faster than 2-4

Usually its a bit better than this, someone in the house is probably seeding torrents. Having a housemate who works for TWC is rather nice.

you're right, upload is not important for people like you.

but for plenty of folks that telecommute typical activities include VPN, Voip, HD video conferencing, desktop sharing, moving files back and forth between a laptop and corporate cloud storage, and upload speeds do matter.

or consider typical use cases that are common for the average person

- HD Skype
- online backup
- cloud storage via dropbox, box, etc.
- consumer voip services
- uploading videos to youtube, vimeo, etc.
- gaming

So great if you don't have upload needs, but a whole lot of people have different needs than you.

The company I work for was acquired and I've been home based. Now, my ISP is fully covered as an expense.

Is there a major difference between TWC business class and the top tier of consumer? I understand the prioritization, but I live on the edge of Knightdale and not sure if that's worth $200 more per month. I'm also not sure of the contract or if it is easy to switch from business class to consumer if I change jobs within 2 years or whatever.

Thoughts?

I'm paying for Turbo at $71 a month for that.

the difference is that they won't give you a residential plan at a business address, save your money

I work out of my house. I was acquired by Oracle. I can choose either since my home is not a business.

TWC:
20 ping
15 Mbps Down
1 Mbps Up

Tethering through my phone w/ unlimited data:
65 ping
28 Mbps Down
8 Mbps Up

I am debating whether I want low ping for gaming vs better transfer speeds for everything else

Like BobbyD, I'm on Fios 50/25 in the Richmond metro area. Pretty happy to be consistently getting above listed speeds.

stevedude, how the hell are you getting that kind of speed over a cellular connection??? (ISP: Sprint PCS)

the ping is kinda meaningless unless you're doing a lot of data intensive stuff to the speedtest server in question.

I get around 55Mbps on speed tests at home, which is about what I expect when paying for a 50Mbps. The weird part is while I get exactly that speed while doing things like torrents, downloads from certain content services far exceed those speeds. I've hit up to 80Mbps downloading a game off Origin. It's like reverse packet shaping. It's consistent too, not that turbo boost shit.
