Old threads were old. I've started coming out here more for work. I'm here the 18th - 28th and want to explore some as I may be eventually moving here.

Anyone have any good suggestions for walk-able areas in downtown, Cherry-Creek, or the Highlands? (or anywhere for that matter - my office is off Colorado and it seems like a boring area).

What's the arts district like on Sante Fe?

downtown Denver is great. The whole main area there just begs to be walked.

Been here for work since November but haven't explored much. A solid place for lunch on Colorado is Mod Market, near the whole foods. 16th street is pretty cool but that is about all i have seen since I have always been in the office. You can go to tbone Tuesdays at Shotgun Willies

My wife and I went to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science when we visited Denver. Even though some of the exhibits seem geared toward kids, there is still a lot of cool stuff (we don't have kids and spent a whole day there). Its huge (4 stories).

Also I've heard the Mint is cool, but check their site for tours before you go because they aren't always open to the public (was closed when we were there).

I live in Denver, 2 miles from downtown next to City Park.

Not sure where you'll be on Colorado Blvd. but yet it's pretty much suburbs down there, if you're into beer there's endless breweries to visit and one place in particular Bull & Bush is off of Colorado near Cherry Creek, winner of a ton of awards including World Beer Cup awards - http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2695

Downtown you can do a walking brewery tour (self-guided) and go from Great Divide, Wynkoop, Denver Beer Co., Prost Brewing, River North Brewery, Our Mutual Friend, Black Shirt... and on and on. If you're into sours, the most renowned brewery is probably Crooked Stave but would require a car or taxi up near 46th/Pecos about a mile north of downtown

Downtown you'll find a lot of things, if you're into museums, the Denver Art Museum is pretty cool (downtown by the capital) as is the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art (downtown off of 15th)

Have walked around a couple areas in West Highlands - the area around around W 32nd/Lowell was neat, and W 39th/Tennyson was alright. Enjoyed both Hops & Pie and Root Down for dinner.

I've always stayed in Boulder but have taken the Denver-Boulder bus to do a couple brewery crawls in the city - was very convenient in my experience, so if you wanted to do the reverse and check out Boulder, that'd be an option.

I would suggest hitting up Red Rocks if you like live music. It's a place that gets great shows stopping through, but it doesn't open for the season until Easter.

I lived in Boulder for 5 years and would suggest taking a day up there to explore. Check out Pearl Street if it's a warm day. Lots of street performers, cool shops and great restaurants. If you like french food, try Brasserie Ten Ten. The Med is across the street and it's also decent. If you're into bourbon, try West End Tavern - a block away.

If you want to see the real hippies that NeuseRvrRat thinks need slapping, head up to Nederland. Nothing but open spaces and medicinal marijuana shops.

Alright I need some backpacking suggestions for Memorial day weekend. Wanting to go on a 1-2 night trip. Looking at Rocky Mountain National Park and some options there. Any suggestions?

You really can't go wrong anywhere in RMNP, I'd suggest near Grand Lake.

The best spot in Colorado IMHO is Maroon Bells wilderness, while the main trail is crowded between the lakes, the wilderness and surrounding trails around the lakes are very quiet and secluded and in the most scenic place in CO outside of RMNP. It's just like 3-1/2 hours from Denver.

Thanks for the advice! I just started researching. Apparently there's been a good bit of snow this season so higher elevations might be out of the question. I'll go ahead and bring some micro spikes and poles but nothing that requires crampons and ice picks. I really want to do Longs Peak in July/August but I was thinking maybe Chasm Lake (base of Longs Peak) for memorial day. The weather said it was 75 there today and it's only 4.2 miles from Longs Peak parking lot.

I've got a couple weeks so I'm going to keep researching. I'd like a little closer to Denver if possible. We're debating on 1 or 2 nights. We also just got into hammock camping so any hike we do will begin/end below the tree line.

I've been halving my expectations of mileage just because it's my first time doing an over nighter in the rockies. We typically do 12-16 easy in the App. Mountains so I'm not planning for more than 5-7 miles in a day for starters.

I might actually be moving there soon so this is just the beginning.

Yea, there's not much backpacking to do between Labor Day (Sept) - Memorial Day (May) due to the snow in Colorado unless you get into snowshoeing (see 10th Mtn http://www.huts.org/) which is freakin' awesome to snowshoe up to the hut system. We also have an extensive number of Yurts. It's basically just 3-months of warm weather at higher elevations for backpacking (June-Aug). Poles are almost a necessity due to the amount of elevation change here. A single trail can take you up 5,000-8,000 vertical which is like climbing from sea level to the top of Mt. Mitchell on the east coast.

I typically snowboard 20 times during the winter, snowshoe dayhike 1-2 times, snowshoe backpack 2 times, summer backpack 2 times, and summer camp like 5 times each year.

Yeah it's memorial day weekend so we'll have to see how the weather is. We're hammock camping so snow isn't a huge deal. Some of the hikes I wanted to do (Chasm lake) seem to be fine at the end of May. We'll bring microspikes and trekking polls. Snowshoeing isn't out of the question. We just need to know what to be prepared for. Looking at the weather most of the areas I'm looking at have highs in the 60's/70's and lows in the 30's.

Yea, it'll be fine, probably just slush/mud at higher elevations. Probably snow above 10,000 ft. for another month.

That's what I thought. Any suggestions on some good scenic loops under 10k? A lot of the hikes I've been looking up are pretty high up and may be too snowy for the people I'm taking.

I visit Denver twice a year for work, always staying in downtown off Stout. After visiting several times, I have a list of restaurants I have to visit. I'll branch out to a new place here and there, but these are so good it's difficult to sometimes:

D'Corazon - affordable mexican located on Blake b/w 15th and 16th st....seriously some of the best Mexican food I've had anywhere; lunch or dinner; closed on Sunday

Panzano - some of the best Italian food I've ever had; eclectic, non-traditional Italian; normally go for happy hour because 1) it is more affordable and 2) their amazing cocktails are cheap

Green - custom salad spot off 16th st. literally right under the tower; really good salads; good for lunch

Cooks Market - sort of a poor mans Whole Foods meets convenience store with an amazing sandwich counter; good for lunch

Taste of the Phillipines - food cart on 16th off Stout; just tried this last month and was a big fan

Aoba Sushi - I attempt to find good sushi everywhere I travel, and this spot is really good; off Blake b/w 15th and 16th; same block as D'Corazon listed above; if you try either drop in at Freshcraft, a craft beer bar located b/w Aoba and D'Corazon; normally a good offering of 20 craft beers on tap

Yeah I'll have to check some of those out. I've been commuting to Denver from Charlotte since February Monday-Friday and finally moved out here.

My favorite restaurants:

Drive to Boulder and/or Estes Park and enjoy better scenery/food? IDK, Denver proper to me is kinda meh given all that there's to do nearby, but let a Denver resident convince you otherwise.

If you wanna get baked, the dispensaries in Denver are quite good. Overall, the breweries are just OK, but I really enjoyed Epic Brewing in RiNo.

Food scene has gotten significantly better since I moved here in 2013. Boulder does have some of the best restaurants.
