One of my old co-workers refused to ever go on a cruise again because she was on a ship that caught fire. Everyone had to evacuate and a few people died. I think it was a Carnival.

He's not really trolling. Once cruise ships are in international waters they dump an absurd amount of waste. They are basically just floating toilets and there is nothing stopping them from dumping untreated sewage.

Quote :
"The wastes from the “floating cities” pose a threat to fragile ecosystems, to sea life, and even to people enjoying a day at the beach, say the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and groups such as Bluewater Network, a coalition of 53 environmental organizations.

A cruise ship with 3,000 passengers can generate 210,000 gallons of waste and sewage and 1 million gallons of gray water from showers and drains in a typical week, the EPA says. There are also discharges of bilge water which may contain oil, grease and other contaminants."

Cruise Ships concentrate people and create many difference waste streams. They are small cities who discharge plumes of waste-water effluent and incinerator ash into the sea that contain toxic metals, chemicals, as well as ammonia and other nutrients (and this is in addition to the 100kg+ of regulated toxic wasted they can generate per day). You are adding phosphates from greywater which is not an issue in the open ocean but is in closed or sensitive waters; bilge water contains oils; and your waste streams have PCP's, heavy metals, chemical dyes, TBT, pharmaceutical waste, toluenes/xylenes/benzenes, and your VOCs and organochlorates. Its not nice stuff in closed like ports or harbors.

As far as fossil fuels go, a lot of them burn bunker fuel (No. 6 Fuel Oil) which is pretty crude and creates a lot of heavy smog and is particularly bad when concentrated at port or stopped somewhere. Some are better at other at taking initiatives to reduce their impacts, Disney usually ranks pretty high, but Carnival is one of the worst.

I don't know why I thought they'd handle waste responsibly. Fuck it, international waters right?

I've never really wanted to do a cruise, a lot of people enjoy them, I just don't see the allure.

I'm gonna get the bf to go on one as a good way to introduce him to international travel and then step off. It'll be cool. It won't be carnival.

Canada is not another country, but a closed resort at a port with other American passengers is?

yeah, unfortunately i already plunked down a non-refundable $300 deposit BEFORE the fire happened. Like 10 days before.

Still, there are dozens of cruise ships that go out every day without incident.

It'll either be a mediocre cruise (my expectations were are already pretty damn low to begin with) or an absolute nightmare/life ending experience.

i'll let you all know how it works out

Can you please call them and record the call and ask what kind of survival gear you should pack? (sound totally serious)

I want to know what they say.

You can pretend you have bought a supply of MREs and Jerky, and ask if you need to bring toilet bags or if those will be provided by staff in the event of a power and plumbing loss.

it was difficult enough to even use the free voucher i had to book it. most unhelpful people in the world. was trying to find dates and they were like, "look online and call back and we will tell you if it's available". gee thanks.

again, my expectations are incredibly low, and they are lowering by the minute. good thing I haven't booked my flight to Miami yet.

just my 'luck' right?

Carnival should start marketing their cruises as camping on the seas.

i could actually end up making money by selling them to the highest bidder, on top of litigation fees of course

they can boat and helicopter hot food to the ship, they can't boat or helicopter hot shit off of it. leave out the MREs and stock up on toilet bags. Any camping store will have them, even Grainger or Northern will have them. You can even get a portable toilet seat with it for less than $10.

or, better idea: bring some sheets of UHMW or low-friction plastic and some large band clamps. When the toilets stop working, use the band clamp to make a channel out of the UHMW sheets and slope them downward off of the ship. Add some curtains for privacy and you've got yourself a private toilet with no mess!
