Go to a bible study? Recently ranked as the most bibleminded city in the US:http://cities.barna.org/americas-most-and-least-bible-minded-cities/

Go to a Volunteers football game in the fall. Their stadium is ridiculous (seats over 100,000) and the Vol Navy (rich alum with boats that dock on the Tennessee River just outside the stadium) is cool. Tailgating scene is pretty big too. There is also a great mom and pop Italian restaurant called Louis that has awesome spaghetti. I don't normally order spaghetti at an Italian restaurant, but trust me you won't be disappointed. They also give you huge portions which explains why it is a favorite with the morbidly obese locals. Other than that, not sure what else to suggest. I have family in Knoxville so I've been quite a few times, and I would just say be glad you are only going for a year.

Hey, I live in Knoxville. I guess choosing a place to live depends on what you want to do. Do you like a downtown scene? Do you like feeling rich and suburban? Do you want a centralized location? Where is your work? Knoxville has cool stuff going on all the time and I don't really know a lot of bible thumpers so that statistic shocked me.

^,^^ thank you for the responsesI figure the downtown scene will best suit my lifestyle at this point. I haven't been single or on my own in 9 years so I'm looking for an area where I can meet lots of people.

I lived in sterchis for two months before we bought a house. It was alright, if I were single and less domesticated it would have been more fun. I really miss being walking distance to everything. There are a lot of nice lofts near downtown but you're gonna pay for it. Our 1200sqft two bedroom with gay st view was $1000/mos. Look around gay street and surrounding areas.. Don't go east of the old city over the bridge, that's straight ghetto.

^thanks againI was actually looking at Sterchis today. I'd like to be within walking distance of everything and I don't mind dropping $1k a month for a place.

^ i used to wait tables there.. the corn bread is awesome i'd say live downtown. walking distance to the bars and a decent, but sometimes odd, music scene. definitely check out some games in the fall. Neyland is an amazing stadium and game day is ridiculous. the copious amount of drinking and stupidity that takes place is unmatched (it's actually the third largest stadium in the country behind penn state and michigan)i lived there only to go to college though, so my opinion might be slightly skewed.
