I'm new to the whole car thing. What is the cheapest I can get a working car made after 1970 for?

Any car that runs is worth $500.Therefore, $500.

^^ is closer than ^If you have hte mechanical knowledge to not get taken, and the patience/time to find someone who wants to get rid of something quick.

If you understand cars enough that you know what sounds mean and are capable of checking fluid levels and doing some very very basic maintenance yourself the $500 is probably rightIf you are completely clueless about cars and can't even check your oil the $2000 is probably right

Eh. Had we not ended up donating the Alero I probably would have put it on craigslist for somewhere in the $500-$750 range. Needed a gasket replaced (I think lower intake manifold but not sure) to stop a nasty coolant leak, but if you were vigilant about topping up the coolant every time you went anywhere, it ran just fine. For someone who had the knowhow to replace the part in question, could have been turned into a reasonably reliable car for $Rhode Island.
