I once saw a chinese graduate student open up a can of Purina, put it in a bowl, and put that shit in the microwave, then proceed to eat it.

Holding back a gag reflex, I asked why she was eating dogfood.

She said "Ina China, we eata dog."

She thought Dogfood was made out of dog.

Hong Kong has belonged to mainland China now. Though they don't like being ruled by communist party.

I just posted about why this is so; technically, they only "mix up L and R in writing" (and even then only for the outside world, using R and not L when writing Japanese words with English letters) while in speech they use a sound that's somewhere in-between because it's the only sound like that in their language (and it just so happens to be in ours too, but we just call it the "lazy t or d" in words like "butter" and "ladder"): http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=634623&page=2#15704051

More on-topic, I don't intend to ever go to Beijing and hope that shoot doesn't get sent back there because of problems with his paperwork: http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=634504

I really like the artwork carved into the roofs of the buildings. Old houses in America had similar decorations, but carpenters are too expensive today and all houses look the same.

I like the idea of hidden courtyard gardens in the middle of a busy city.

Is this the same place? Beijing is so big!

Xisi Bei Santiao
This hutong has some well-preserved courtyard houses which are under protection from the municipality. No. 39 was the home of Cheng Yanqiu, famous Beijing opera singer.

Courtyard homes in a variety of sizes can be seen around Xisi. On 19 Xisi Bei Santiao is a well-preserved one with three rooms. Larger courtyards, such as the one on 11 Xisi Bei Santiao, have dozens of rooms and a number of gardens. These old structures showcase ancient Beijing architecture, including mendun (gate piers), yingbi (screen walls) and stone carvings. "

Yes, this is where I lived for 18 years.
And the courtyard in your previous pic is very similar with my home style.

I'm still running Beijing b1.8, when I tried to upgrade to b4 my graphics card was having trouble rendering all of the smog.

What kind of radeon do I need to run b4?

I spent a summer in China. I liked Beijing because the train/metro made it easy to get around and I met some really cool people. It was hella smoggy though, the life expectancy for that city must be taking a hit.

I liked Hangzhou much better, but that's where I was for 5.5 weeks or so for my program. I am dying to go back.

Hangzhou is a mid-size city. Totally different life style. But I like NC better than Beijing now.

I just liked how it catered to Westerners and had a large ex-pat community. The More Hanzhou magazine was a life saver for finding restaurants that weren't traditional Chinese. I got so sick of kai lan, eggplant, and rice after a while.
