I want to run some new games like gta 5 and sim city 5 on a small, mobile laptop but don't really want some big alienware type of laptop. From research, I have gathered that integrated graphics cannot run high-end pc games at all. I have also heard that ultrabooks cannot have dedicated graphics so they are out the window.

I heard PC gaming is dead, should just play all games on your mobile phone.

And PCs are dead too.See: message_topic.aspx?topic=608736&page=6#15688904But to answer your question ... you don't really have any good options there.[Edited on January 25, 2013 at 9:56 AM. Reason : .]

I bought a dell 15" with a decent dedicated graphics card. It's not super high end by any means, but it does a pretty damn good job with Civ5, which is the only game I currently have installed on it.

There's a few options. The new Samsung Series 7 (ultrabook) has a 1GB AMD HD8570. 13" 1080p screen. http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/hands-on-samsung-series-7-ultra/The Acer Aspire ultrabook has an nvidia 640M. The ASus UX32VD ultrabook has an Nvidia 620M. Not too powerful but still more powerful than HD 4000. There's a few others:http://www.ultrabookreview.com/367-ultrabooks-dedicated-graphics-dvd-touchscreen-rare-commodity/

Intel's upcoming processors are supposed to have much better integrated graphics.http://www.anandtech.com/show/6266/idf-2012-haswell-gt3-running-skyrimBut they don't release until June.

Better than a dedicated chip like those above?

^^^^ no almost certainly not, but they will be smaller. He mentioned that integrated graphics won't run high end games, but in the next generation that might just change.

^ great laptop and I would have bought one if my new job didn't provide me one.

someone talk me out of spending $1100 on a laptop. that thing looks sweet and is better than my 2010 desktop.
2/9/2013 9:32:09 AM
Looks like the $1239 one is the one with the 650M. Still hard to justify spending that much on a laptop without a full HD screen.
2/9/2013 10:26:07 AM
i'll talk you out of it easy, they overheat so easyi can't play civ 5 for more than 30 minutes or it overheatsi have a toshiba 13" with an amd 6450 (or is it 6540) and the fan is working overtime for gaming to the point that i've decided it was a bad idea. I would have rather gotten a quiet dependable laptop and a separate desktop.

thanks. I play Civ V a lot so that was pretty good dissuasion. even my desktop gets loud with games but I don't have that shit sitting on my lap.[Edited on February 9, 2013 at 10:38 AM. Reason : .]

feedback?

SSD on a laptop is very nice, near instant bootup. That and 13 inch will still be big enough, 14 is just more weight to lug around and you'll notice the weight with any of these.
2/28/2013 11:42:38 PM
I got the first one. Its 14 but its 3.4 pounds vs the 3.1 pound smallest one. I'll take 8gb ram and 128 ssd for an extra few ounces.

good luck with it, I'm very curious as to how hot the cpu/gpu get with it being in a laptop.

if they only had dedicated graphics
3/2/2013 11:21:26 AM
for most of last year I used a Lenovo T420s (the slim version of the T420). it had dedicated graphics, 14" 1600x900 screen and was only 3.5 lbs. it could get a little bit warm around the left vent when doing intensive operations and the touchpad had a rougher texture - i prefer a completely smooth touchpad like on a MBA, but other than that it was a very solid machine.[Edited on March 2, 2013 at 3:57 PM. Reason : will be interested to hear how you like that gigabyte. keep us posted]
