Is there any particular reason why they automatically get thumbnailed? Is this to reduce bandwidth, or is there some deeper reason (other than something that's supposed to entice us to buy premie)?

I never really thought about it either

I suppose you know the trick where you can capitalize any letter in JPG and it'll make it large

I imagine it's for the premie thing
