The 7th annual HKonJ march and rally is coming up in Raleigh soon on Saturday Feb 9th. People always gather on the street between McDonalds and Shaw University around 10am with the march to the General Assembly building starting at 10:30am. There are plenty of parking decks and other parking nearby. Here are a few pics from previous years. There aren't any checks and balances left on the GOP with it controlling all 3 branches of the state government with super-majorities in the legislature, other than public pressure and the media, and this kind of event helps with those a little. Mostly though it's just a fun way to spend a morning supporting a cause, especially if this winter continues to be unusually warm.

If you're asking why about the starting location, I assume it has to do with the symbolism of a university and the value of education, and the fact that it's the oldest historically black university in the south. And it's a good distance for a march in the capital city to the legislative building without being too far that older folks can't participate. If you're asking about why as in motivation for the march and rally, it's in support of a variety of progressive causes. If you're asking why about the time, it's a big rally that will make the news around the time the General Assembly is convening for the long legislative session.

I'm assuming you marched against Democrats when they had no checks and balances too, right?
1/16/2013 11:45:09 AM
Yeah, this march has been going on annually for 7 years, and started out when Dems were control of the state legislature and Governorship. This march is pushing causes, not parties. Although I have seen Greens there trying to get petition signatures to get on the ballot in previous years.

Oh, I understand what the march is. I'm pointing out how partisan you are by posting things like:

I think he may have actually been a delegate at the DNC. I know at the very least that he attended the DNC.

At least the weather is going to be nice, sunny and highs in the 50s which is not bad for Feb, especially for an event that's been snowed out in the past.

N&O estimated 10,000 which would definitely exceed previous years.

random march with no stated purpose? sounds like liberal heaven to me.

It had a stated purpose. Increasing awareness and advocacy around issues related to education, poverty, healthcare, criminal justice, and voting rights.Granted being a multi-issue coalition leads to a little bit of everything being thrown in, but this was the theme for this year that went out in the materials ahead of time, was used at the press conferences before hand, and put up on the big screen by the stage for part of the rally. You can see it on display here too:
