Old thread was old and season 2 specific.

Back on in the US tonight for season 3!

At first I was skeptical, but now it's a good show to watch with the wife

I expect bad things to happen this season

It came out in Europe last month so not too hard to find.

Let's not spoil it for those of us supporting PBS in the states ha?

I guess the first episode kinda spoiled me cause I felt very cheated for only getting 53 minutes of Downton last night.

the 2011 Christmas special was great!

I have a coworker who is watching season 3 without ever watching season 2. Just went from season 1 on netflix to season 3 on PBS.... They keep asking me to fill them in on certain things

she did the right thing though. Probably should have gone it when it was first offered instead of "going down the road to ruin" lol

this was kind of a boring episode. I hope there's more drama next week!

ok what the fuck is the christmas episode? I finished season 2 and i couldn't figure out if I was supposed to start S3 or watch the special. Immediately I realized something was off, but checked wikipedia and the release timelines and everything pointed to xmas. So I powered through it.

FML S3 picks up after S2 ends and the special appears to be sometime after S3?

Whoops, maybe I watched the wrong christmas episode? Forgot that S3 is probably only 6 episodes that could have feasibly aired on BBC before the end of 2012?

S1 -> S2 -> 2011 Xmas -> S3 -> 2012 Xmas?

The Christmas special has not aired in the US yet. It will in a few weeks.

8 episodes + Christmas special = s3.

yes, exactly. The 2011 xmas special is on Hulu plus if you have it, season 2 episode 9

It sucks you've watched the 2012 xmas special before season 3 What did you use to see it?

the Christmas specials are always between seasons

And yes, Downton Abbey season 3 and the Christmas special have all already played in the UK which is why you can torrent all of the above online

^Right, I for some reason didn't think BBC since when I streamed S1 it was PBS Masterpiece Theatre. So after Netflix ran out I looked for S2. I knew the special was between seasons I just grabbed the wrong one.

So after Season 2 I had season 3 episode 1 and 2012 christmas special queued up trying to figure out which to watch. I didn't want to inadvertently spoil anything by browsing threads or wiki entries for too long and thought for sure S3E01 would recap the xmas events.

tl;dr:
I thought it was a PBS venture and that since 1/2013 was Season 3 that 12/2012 had to be the right special to watch after Season 2.

without giving away spoilers, the christmas special redeems the season finale imo. season finale left me rolling my eyes.

Spoiler alert

They said on the new that a main character might die. I thought it might be the baby, then thought everything was ok, but once I saw him in the car I knew he was a goner.

Yes, that was the Christmas special

and yeah, people knew he wanted to leave the show

based on the setting, I was waiting on a hunting accident the whole time I was watching that episode

in any case, he's really dead and I hope this show doesn't become THE EDITH SHOW next season

Edith is unremarkable, I'm sure they wouldn't focus on her character. More likely Rose will get the most attention.

And why would he want to leave a solid gravy train? Does he think he can do better? I know many tv actors have thought the same thing and fell flat on their faces.

If any of the cast starts hinting that they might want to leave, Julian Fellowes kills their character off.

^^ Honestly, can you think of a better way to write him off of the show besides killing him?

Everyone would've been much more upset had he run away with some other chick, etc- it would've had to be something entirely out of character for Matthew

I can understand the death having to happen but the execution (lol pun) was just way too harsh for me. Maybe a little good bye deathbed scene? I dont know. But the dead face and eyes and the blood running down...

I just heard about Call the Midwife. Season 2 starts this Sunday on PBS so I figured I'd mention it here for the PBS viewers.

I haven't seen Season 1, but it was enthusiastically/aggressively recommended to me as meticulous, gritty, heartwarming, every positive adjective ever.
