Saw it last night. The score was great and the movie was well done overall but it was starting to drag near the end.If I had to pick one thing I didn't like, it would be Russel Crowe. He's a fine actor, but his singing felt really flat to me. I'm not sure how to describe it beyond that.

How dare you bad mouth the lead singer of 30 Odd Feet of Grunt.

it looked like something I'd watch, until I found out it was a musicalpass
12/29/2012 12:37:01 PM
You only now heard it was a musical? What rock have you been living under? and did the previews where everything was sung not tip you off?[Edited on December 29, 2012 at 1:02 PM. Reason : ]

^4 Samantha Bark is Eponine in the concert and the movie.Saw it last night with my wife (she's a big LesMis fan). Crowe was a distraction, he just doesn't have a powerful enough voice for Javier's parts. Other than that I enjoyed the movie, as did my wife.It took me half the movie to remember I was watching Hugh (the bushy sideburns just made him scream Wolverine). He doesn't have a great voice but I think he did a fantastic job overall.

I thought Crowe as Javert was a little underwhelming when he was singing in a multi-part song. I thought Enjolras or whatever the guy in the red was called did a great job.[Edited on December 29, 2012 at 8:41 PM. Reason : I have thoughts on all the characters but I'm on an iPhone. Solid A movie]

^ It looked like something the wife would want to see and that I could possibly enjoy a little, then I found out it was a musical. I'm pretty lucky; my wife hates musicals as much as I do.

^^I'd say this one is worth it. The actors sang live on set and that's what made the final cut. I think a lot will be lost when this goes to the small screen.Of course this is the second movie I've seen in theaters this year. I'm sure if I saw Transformers the Musical on screen I may say the same thing.

As Les Miserables the musical is my favorite work of fiction of all time across all types of media, I knew I would only be underwhelmed. And I was, but only a little bit. It was faithful adaptation (almost totally unabridged) with some arrangement choices that killed some momentum that was supposed to be there. And Crowe had no business in that role. But, was really pretty good, will be purchasing.[Edited on December 31, 2012 at 10:33 AM. Reason : ]

The opening scene really was epic. I had about 7 beers in me and I was impressed. The next 2 hours dragged quite a bit though.

I loved this movie! I didn't know the story before seeing the movie. I want to see it again!!
1/6/2013 3:29:03 PM
So are the songs in the movie the same ones as in the play? I'm asking for a girl, I'm not going to see this in the theatre.
1/7/2013 1:50:14 PM
^ Yes, it's almost a 100% adaptation.
1/7/2013 2:49:30 PM
As with most great musicals, the songs are awesome but (because?) the plot sucks.
1/7/2013 3:13:36 PM
I think the plot was good but the acting/singing sucked - With the exceptions of Fantine, Eponine, and that street rat kid. But mostly I was so freaking bored, even more bored than I was during Snow Wite and the Huntsman. And I was pretty bored then.
1/9/2013 10:39:15 AM
an intermission would have been awesommeeeeeeee
1/9/2013 12:28:50 PM
more bored than snow white...well, this just lost all interest for me.

Dang. I spelled white wrong. Poooo I hate typos

Didn't realize it, but Samantha Barks, the woman who played Eponine, apparently played the same role in the London West End run of Les Miserables. Also comes with decent singing chops. So yeah... I guess that explains why she nailed the part.
1/9/2013 12:58:32 PM
haven't seen it but heard the songs and Wolverine was cry-singing to much.
1/9/2013 4:39:14 PM
i think everyone cry-sang at some pointit was like LOOK AT MY FACENOW LOOK INSIDE IT

Saw the show live in the West End in London and was blown away. Saw the movie, and was generally satisfied with the representation, but nothing is like seeing it live with real voice talent. The movie does it justice, though I'd echo that Russel Crowe has no place in the movie with so weak a voice. The Javert character needed a deeper, more powerful singing voice. All you brosephs that think it's just another gay musical are doing yourself a disservice. This one is more than a musical, and its not the typical Glee-like song and dance pageantry that you'd expect from one. It's a real story that will resonate with everyone because of it's sweeping touches on human nature.
1/13/2013 11:18:04 AM
^ that's what I thought. Then found the YouTube video of the London version and was immediately sucked in. Crowe would have been a good choice if this didn't involve singing. Both the entire 10 and 25 year anniversary London performances are on YouTube. There are several people from both in the movie, which is cool.
1/13/2013 12:08:29 PM
I enjoyed Sacha Baron Cohen stealing shit
1/13/2013 9:31:05 PM
I laughed at an exchange in song that I gathered was supposed to be angry. Then I turned it off.The opening was epic looking, but I think the song made it small.
1/13/2013 9:53:06 PM
^The first 40 minutes can be tough to get through for those who don't already know the story. The director struggled to keep it all together, and having them sing it live on camera took away from some of the booming impact you would expect.
