Not really much left to sanction, and even if we did, they're completely worthless if the Chinese keep undermining the system.

We should confiscate their rollercoasters. They're pretty much the only things left in the country.

Assuming, of course, that they weren't scrapped to build the rocket.

Rand corporation report about the possible outcomes if NK collapses

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24182193

Can't imagine if a crisis like that were to happen how it would affect the rest of the world. As long as no nukes are used, the world should be good, aside from economic effects.

Haven't read the full RAND report yet, but nothing in the BBC article is particularly new at least in the Korea policy circles. Everyone really hates the current North Korean regime, yet everyone also has nightmares about what happens if it collapses. Again, loose nukes, millions of refugees going into China, Russia and South Korea... it would be a disaster. If the ROK had to go north though, I imagine that the United States and China would probably come to an agreement to keep American forces behind the 38th parallel and let the ROK Army & MC deal with it. Probably would be less of a culture shock anyway for North Koreans as well to at least have Korean speaking soldiers occupying their cities.

Many of the countryside photos are reminiscent of South Korea from the early 1960s (bad old, pre-industrial days). While the pictures by themselves are harmless, I can understand why they would be touchy of them: people will come along and compare them against the South, and it reinforce just how backwards the North currently is. Still, if they were savvy, they would allow more of these pictures, just to help humanize the North.

Seems like the strategy might be to foment collapse, secure nuke sites, and pay the price of whatever happens with refugees.

I just want to say that this old dumbass had it coming to be detained. I think he should be hung out to dry if they are trying to use him as a bargaining chip.

Who the fuck fights a war against a country and then comes back later as a tourist while it remains as one of two countries in the world that utterly despise you?

This seems kinda big. Kim Jon Un executed his uncle, considered the second most powerful man in North Korea. I heard on the BBC this morning that he was forcibly removed from a meeting, disappeared, and his execution was announced 3 days later.

Some more intersting details

http://news.yahoo.com/leader-39-uncle-rose-no-2-north-korea-155313036.html

Quote :
"A shrewd-looking man who wore tinted glasses, Jang had basked in his special status as the second in power. He displayed boldness at public events where the rest of the top officials sat at attention, applauding with the kind of ennui only displayed by one other man: Kim Jong Un.

In its sharply worded character assassination, KCNA castigated Jang for "unwillingly standing up from his seat and half-heartedly clapping" when Kim received an important title.

State media portrayed Jang as a power-hungry and ambitious challenger to the throne who resorted to nepotism and favoritism to build his "little kingdom" as he plotted a coup against his nephew."

Apparently Jang and KJU have been clashing for a while, and the latter has been quietly working behind the scenes to set up elimination of the former. What's shocking by this entire scenario isn't that Jang was purged, these sorts of things are standard politics in North Korea, but that it was an execution and an extremely public one at that. The North tends to just make people disappear, not drag them out in public and shoot them. Clearly KJU has decided to bring both the party and military in line with this one, reminding them all that no one is powerful enough to avoid the firing squad.

We'll see how this plays out.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised. An out of work former NBA player suddenly being best friends with a basketball obsessed dictator seems pretty convenient.

Maybe this is old news, but I'm just seeing it for the first time. I'm posting for the article itself, not the comments section, not sure what the comments say, didn't read em.

http://imgur.com/gallery/7A8Aj

Interesting note at the end though, about FDR not bombing the rail lines to the concentration camps. I've never thought about that question.

Are we that afraid of China that we can't do anything? Sure on a world level KJU is a laughing joke, but when it comes to his own people, he's just awful.

Rodman was just drunk

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/09/world/asia/north-korea-dennis-rodman-apology/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Quote :
""I embarrassed a lot of people," said Rodman, who traveled to North Korea with other former NBA players for a basketball game against a North Korean team. "I'm very sorry. At this point I should know better than to make political statements. I'm truly sorry."

He said the day of the interview had been "very stressful."

"Some of my teammates were leaving because of pressure from their families and business associates," he said, adding that his dream of "basketball diplomacy was quickly falling apart."

"I had been drinking," he said. "It's not an excuse but by the time the interview happened I was upset. I was overwhelmed.""

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/feb/17/un-warns-north-koreas-kim-jong-un-strongly-worded-/

Quote :
"North Korea forces women to undergo abortions and young mothers to drown their newborn babies, and has starved and executed hundreds of thousands of detainees at secret prison camps — atrocities that the chairman of a U.N. panel that documented the abuses compares to those of Nazi Germany.

“The gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world,” the U.N. Commission on Inquiry said in a 372-page report released Monday on North Korea’s atrocities. These crimes are ongoing because “the policies, institutions and patterns of impunity that lie at their heart remain in place.”"
